MOCCASIN.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ELIZABETH HELEN RoBsoN HALL, a subject of the Queen of England, residing at Brockville, in the county of Leeds and Province Vof Ontario, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Moccasins, of which the following is a speciiication. Y

My invention relates to improvements in moccasins; and it consists in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, fully described hereinafter and claimed.

It is my object to provide a moccasin which will prevent the entrance therein of wet and snow, and which will not sag around-the ankle parts when wet, and which will be more readily secured to the foot than the old form.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inoccasin. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the quarters or ankle parts. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the heelprotecting piece. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the bellowstongue.

Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters denote corresponding parts in all the iigures, A designates the foot-piece, and B B the quarters or ankle parts, stitched together down the back and along the lower edge to the upper edge of the foot-piece.

Gis a canvas, duck, or other suitable stiff lining, placed on the inside cf the quarterpieces and secured thereto by stitching and cement, this latter being designed to aid inexcludin g the dampness, and also, in addition to the natural stiffness of the lining, to give'firmness and strength to the said quarters to prevent the same from sagging when wet.`

D represen ts a piece of stout leather secu red by stitching on the inside of the duck lining, at the back of the moccasin and extending the erin g the back seam of the moccasin and being asupport to the heel thereof. The main object, however, of this strip is to afford a protection to the duck or canvas lining in putting on and taking off the moccasin, this continued wear being apt in time to tear thesaid lining and deprive the quarters of the necessary stiffness.

inside of the front edges of the quarters, and in perforations formed in said stiffening-strips E and the material of the moccasin are placed the hooked lace-loops F, and riveted therein. To the outer side of the quarters, at points below the lower lace-hooks F, are secured, by rivets or other suitable means, loops f, of leather, through which is passed the lacing cord or thong F. The use of the said lace-loops is a great improvement over the old manner of securing moccasins, as by this method the quarters can be pulled tightly around the ankle, and the strips E prevent the strain of said pullingfrom stretching or tearing the material of the inoccasin.

G represents the bellows-tongue, formed of the two side strips, g, of'very pliable or soft leather, and the central strip or strips, H, of stouter leather,preferably ofthe same of which the moccasin is made.

In the drawings I have shown two central strips, H, although there may be more or less than two, and the said strips H and g are stitched tightly together, and the outer edges of the side strips are securely attached, by stitching or riveting, or both, to the quarters of the nioccasin near the rear edges of the strips E.

When the moccasin is laced, the strips are adapted to close the space between the adjacent edges of the quarters, the quarters lapping over the said tongue, and the side strips, g, are merely designed as a close and pliable connection between the strips H and the quarters, their function being to hold the protectingstrips H in place and prevent snow and dampness, which might work in under the front edges of the quarters, from reaching the interior of the mo'ccasin.

The advantages of my improvement will be evident from the foregoing. The quarters are prevented from sagging, when they become wet, by the stiff lining. The heel is further strengthened and protected from wear by the heel-strip. The lace-loops are adapted to facilitate lacing, and the protecting-strips are placed on the inside of the quarters to prevent stretching and tearing thereof, and a bellows-tongue is placed on the front to exclude all dampness and snow, thus making my improved moccasin a dry,war1n, easily-applied, and extremelydurable covering for the foot.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A moceasinhnving the quarters 'B and the tongue G, formed of n central still' section, II, and the leaves g, of pliable leather, perinanently secured to the side edges of the central section and to the quarters, substantially ns described, for the purpose set forth.

2. 3. A Inoceasin having the quarters B, provided nt their free edges with the permanent biuding'strips E, the lneehooks secured tothe binding-strips, the loops f, secured to the quarters at points below thelowerlaee-hook, a laeing cord or thong passing through the loops and adapted to engage the lace-hooks, and the tongue having the pliable side sections, g, permanenti y secured to the quarters in rear ol' the line of the luce-hooks, to thereby provide nps which nre adapted to fold upon the tongue, as and for the purpose described.
