UNI ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. NICHOLS, OF BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT'IN ORNAMENTAL SEAMS FOR CLOTHING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,876, dated May 23, 1876; application filed March 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that-LJAMEs H. NIcHoLs, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and. valuable Improvement in Seams for Clothing, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of the first row of stitching b. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 show the seam with two rows of stitching.
Figs. 5, 6, and 7 show the seam with a single row of stitching.
This invention has relation to the seaming of cloth in the manufacture of clothing; and the nature of my invention consists in a double overlaid seam, formed so as to expose on the right side of the goods two laps, one on each side of the seam which unites the pieces of goods, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, Fig. 1, a a, designate two pieces of cloth, which may be of wool or other material suitable for, winter or summer clothing. The pieces are laidtogether face to face, and stitched, as indicated at b-one row of stitching being sufficient-at any desired distance from the edges. These edges will in some cases be neatly trimmed, so that they can be left raw when stitched down, as will be hereinafter explained. Having stitched the two pieces together, as'
of two witnesses.
above described, they are spread. out upon a press-board, and the'two seam-edges pressed down smooth on their respective pieces of cloth, exposing the wrong sides of the pieces on the right side of the goods. These seamedges, which I now designate by the letter 0, are secured down to the body of the cloth by one or two rows of stitching, as shown in the drawings.
A seam thus formedis not only strong and secure, but it presents a very handsome'appearance, making the articles of clothing more attractive and salable.
I an: aware that the above-described seam is not new per se, and I, therefore, lay no. claim to it irrespective of the special method of forming and applying it to garments, as above described.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- a The method of uniting pieces of cloth to form a garment of wearing apparel, or a portion thereof, consisting of the scam I) c 0, constructed and arranged as described, so that a portion of the wrong side of the goods shall be shown on the right side of thesaine, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence JAMES H. NICHOLS.
' Witnesses:
