VEST.l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,254, dated May 16, 1899. Application iiled February 21,1898. Serial Ilm-671,011. (Model.)
To al?, whom it may con/cern:
Be itlinown that I, JOSEPH G. EWING, a citizen of the United States, residing at McDonald, in the county of lVashington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a neu7 and useful Improvement in Vests. and Coats, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to economize material and labor in and thereby reduce the cost of manufacturing coats and vests by providing the same with false lapels which simulate those of the usual construction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face vieuT of one side of a vest constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a View of the inner side of suoli portion of a vest. Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section on line 3 3, Fig. 1.
The numeral 1 designates the cloth forming the face or outer portion of the vest. The same is turned over at its front edge 2 and sewed to the vest-lining 4, which it overlaps, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Such lap is covered by a braid or tape 3, made of inelastic material, Which is sewed to both the lining 4 and inturned edge 2 of the cloth 1. Thus stretching of the garment along the edge is prevented and both strength and durability are increased.
The vest is double-stitched along the zigzag or irregular line 5, Figs. 1 and 3, Which line describes the contour or outer edge of the loose or folding lapel With which vests are ordinarily provided. This line of stitching 5 and the lapped edge 2 of the cloth 1 form opposite edges of a pocket, into Which cotton or other suitable padding G is inserted for the purpose of forming a swell or projection of the cloth l at a, which swell simulates the ordinary lapel in appearance.
It will be seen that the inelastic tape 3 has an important function in connection with the padding 6 in that it prevents stretching of the cloth 1, so that the padding is held in its original position, and the form and appearance of the false or simulated lapel a therefore remain the same as long as the vest is Worn. Even Washing and wringing do not displace it.
By this invention I am able to produce a vest or coat at a materially reduced cost.
Vhat I claim is- AAs an improved article of manufacture, a vest having its cloth front turned over and sewed down, a piece of inelastic fabric', which covers the lap of the cloth, and is sewed to the latter and the lining along its respective edges, a line of stitching which unites the cloth and lining u pon a line following the contour of an ordinary folded lapel, and a padding inserted in the pocket thus formed, Whereby'a swell is formed on the face of the vest, to simulate a folded lapel, as shown and described. v
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
