Description

(No Model.)
B. JACOBS. SAFETY. POCKET-FOR GARMENTS.
Patented Oct '7, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS JACOBS, OF PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA.
SAFETY-POCKET FOR GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,903, dated October 7, 1890.
. Application filed July 15, 1889. Serial No. 317,545. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS JACOBS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Petaluma, in the county of Sonoma and State of California, have invented certain newand useful Improvementsin Safety-Pockets forWearing-Apparel, of which the following is a specifiation.
My invention has for its object to provide safety-pockets for coats, trousers, and other garments; and it consists of a secret pocket or receptacle placed between the body or outside of the garment and the lining, as hereinafter fully described, and capable of being drawn out through a slit or aperture in the lining suliiciently to uncover the mouth or inlet and of returning to its position within the garment when released, the same being constructed substantially as hereinafter set forth.
The accompanying drawings that form part of this specification illustrate the construction and application of my improved pocket in a pair of trousers and waistcoat.
Figure 1 represents the waistband portion of a pair of trousers with a safety-pocket formed in it according to my invention, the View being taken from the inside of the waistband. Fig. 2 represents one side of a Waistcoat with the safety-pocket on the inside, the lining being removed in portions.
A indicates the cloth or the body of the garment, and B the lining or inner thickness of material.
C is the secret pocket, having a mouth or opening C along the top, and D is the slit or aperture provided in the lining through which the pocket is drawn to the outside for access to its opening 0*.
E is a band or strap of elastic webbing between the body port-ion and the lining of the garment, to which is attached the back or inner edge of the pocket, the strap being itself secured only by its opposite end to the body or the lining, or to a stay-piece, or the seam of the garment, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The purpose of this elastic strip is to allow the pocket to be drawn laterally outward through the slit D a sufficient distance, and to draw back the pocket into position again inside the slit when released.
Some suitable means to hold the outer end of the pocket in position to be readily seized by the fingers is applied to this end just inside the slit, such as a button-hole f in the end of the pocket-piece and button 9 on the garment. A hook-and-eye fastening could be used for the purpose instead of the button and button-hole, if preferred.
The pocket maybe made of different sizes, both as to length and depth. In applying it to the waistband of trousers it will be seen that the depth of the pocket will be determined by the width of the waistband. For coats and Waistcoats, however, the depth can be much greater.
The elastic draw-strap should be applied to draw equally along the whole end of the pocket, so that for a deep pocket the strap should have the same width as the pocketpiece, or several narrow straps should be applied in such manner that the top and bottom edges of the pocket shall be drawn equally by the straps, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described safety-pocket for garments, consisting of the pocket-piece 0, having a mouth O along the top adapted to be inserted under the lining of the garment and to be drawn outward through a slit in said lining, and the elastic strap or band attached to the inner end of the pocket and to the garment to return the pocket to place, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in trousers, Waistcoats, or other garments, of the laterally-drawing pocket C, having a mouth O along the top, a slit or apertureD in the lining, through which the pocket is adapted to be drawn, the elastic draw strap or band E, and a fastening device, as a button and button-hole, applied to that end of the pocket next to the slit, substan tially as described, for operation as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
ELIAS JACOBS. [L. s]
Witnesses: I
E. RoNALsoN, WM. A. CHAPMAN.
