IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,433, dated March 19, 1878; application filed August 14, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS D. MARE, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts; and do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a front view, and Fig. 2 a rear elevation, of a shirt of my improved kind.
My invention is an improvement in shirts that are generally closed in the front, but are open entirely down the back, and there furnished with waist-straps for securing together the lapping parts.
In carrying out my said invention I form each of the edges of the back-opening concave, nearly, if not entirely, throughout its length, especially at the waist, as shown at Z m 0, instead of straight or convex, as heretofore, whereby I not only require less material in the making of the shirt, but have very much less over, and underlap or waste cloth on the back when the shirt may be upon the body of a person.
In the drawings, the shirt is shown as open lengthwise of and throughout the back. The side portions a b of the back are to lap one on the other, and each has a strap, 0, extended from it, at its edge at the Waist, one of such portions being provided with a slot, d, to receive the strap of the other. In each strap, near its outer end, is a button-hole, e, to engage with one of two buttons, f f, fixed to the sides of the shirt at the Waist. The collarband 9, and yoke or upper part of the backopening, I provide with button-holes and buttons, as shown at h i, for there securing the shirt properly to the neck and upper part of the back of a wearer.
I do not claim a shirt made with a closed front, and with the back open through its entire'length.
What I claim as my invention is- The improved manufacture of open back shirt, made substantially as described, with each of the edges of its back-opening curved concavely, as set forth, such edges being provided with fastening devices at the neck, and with straps to extend from them, the said edges, to the sides of the shirt, and to fasten or button thereto, as explained.
