Description
UNITED STATES 1ZIEATENT OFFICE,
ALEXANDER ADAMSON, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHOULDER-BRAOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,994, dated August 13, 1878; application led November 3, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER ADAMsoN, of Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shoulder-B races; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exa-ct description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a top view of the buckle. Figs. 2 and 6 are perspective views of the brace. Figs. 3
and 5 are, respectively, rear and front views` of the brace applied to the person. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the buckle, and Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section ci the buckle and brace-strap.
This invention has relation to shoulderbraces, and is designed, chiefly, for use by women, although it will serve as well for men.
It consists, mainly, in the construction and novel arrangement of the quarter slotted buckle and the brace-band, having end-con-v necting plates or fastenings, and designed to be looped crosswise through the slots of said buckle arranged at the small of the back, as hereinafter fully shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the buckle, usually of elliptical form. This consists of a peripheral flange, a, connected with an inner parallel body portion,
'11, or ring, by bent arms c, in such a manner it across through the two lower slots, so that the buckle is brought to the center, and then forming the shoulder-loops D by passing the ends diagonally downward and across each other through opposite upper and lower slots. The depending ends E of the band are then passed around the waist and fastened together in front.
This arrangement is best suited for women, and the brace may be worn by men in the same manner; or the ends E may be attached to the buttons of the pantaloons; and, if desired, suspender-straps may be attached to the front portions of the shoulder-loops to connect with the pantaloons in front.
This brace is readily adjusted by sliding the band in the slots of the back buckle to suit the form of the person wearing it, whether the shoulders be wide or narrow, fleshy or othV` erwise, and whether the person be lon g-waisted or short. The buckle, although without teeth, holds the band securely, and yet it can be readily adjusted by the wearer when in position.
Having described this invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the buckle A, having curved slots cl, of a single band looped for the shoulders and provided with end-fastenings, substantially as specified.
2. A brace consisting of a back buckle and a single band provided with shoulder-loops, and having its ends adapted to pass around the waist and fasten in irontsubstantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER ADAMSON.
