A I OVERALLS'.

NITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
STEPHEN LASKEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 73306, dated February 8, 1876 application filed December 18, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN LASKEY, of Boston, in the county ofSuffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersof reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 represents a horizontal section through the waistband of a pair of overalls to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 represents an.eleva tion of a detached portion of the front of the waistband, a part of the front side of the Waistband and pocket being torn off to show the method of securing and adjusting the cord. 1
1n manufacturing overalls and other garments it has become a desideratum to have some simple and cheap mode of adjusting the same waistband to the persons of wearers of dilferent sizes.
My improvement relates to a device for that purpose, and consists in providing the garment with a hollow waistband, and then inserting a cord within the same, fastening one. end within the hollow of .the waistband at or near one end, and leaving 'the other to protrude through a small opening at the other end. The one end being fastened, the waist is adjusted when the garment is on by drawing the cord tight and then forming a knot on it close to the opening through which it protru 'les. Once adjusted, the garment is used in the same manner as an ordinary garment.
The improvement also consists in combining a pocket with the waistband for the purpose of receiving and holding the superfluous part of the cord.
To enable others skilled in the art to make, construct, and use my improvement, I will now proceed to describe its parts in detail.
In the drawing, a represcntsa hollow waistband applied to a pair of overalls, in which is arranged a cord, b, the inner end of which is fastened in any suitable way to the waistband at or near one end.
In practice, I prefer to form a loop, 0, and then secure it to the waistband by passing the shank of a pants-button, d, through it and the waistband, thereby securing it to the latter. The other or loose end of the cord b is passed through a small opening, 0, in the waistband at or near the other end of the latter.
This opening 0 is worked in the manner of abutton-hol'e, to prevent tearing, and, if desired, may be re-enforced with leather or a piece of the goods itself. In this case it is re-enforced by the strip of cloth used to form the pocket (1 for receiving and holding that portion of the cord which protrudes through the opening 0 of the waistband after the cord has been adjusted to the waist of the wearer.
The opening 6 of the cord opens into this pocket at its rear side.
The improvement is equally applicable to blouses, drawers, pants, and other similar garments.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A garment provided with a hollow waistband having an opening, e, and cord 1), constructed and arranged as described, by means of which the garment can be adjusted and held adjusted to the person of the wearer by simply making a turn or knot on the cord, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a pocket, 01, with the hollow waistband ofa garment, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN LASKEY.
Witnesses S. M. BATES, HENRY A. OoFFIN.
