a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph.l in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain` new and useful Improvements. in Pockets, ot which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pockets adapted for use on shirts, bib-overalls, and jackets.

My object is to provide an improved pocket which will combine features considered essential by the various classes of persons wearing shirts, jackets, and bib-overalls, so that, in the combination of features provided in my pocket, each class ot user will find the feature or features meeting his requirements.

Un garments worn by railroad men, a pocket with a side opening through which a watch may be readily introduced and removed with provision of means preventing accidental or unauthorized removal of the watch, is usually required. On the other hand, other classes of trade require a pocket provided with a flap and means for buttoning it; still other classes consider necessary the provision of a scabbard pocket to hold a pencil, rule, or the like, said scabbard pocket being combined with a main pocket.

The present invention provides a novel combination of features meeting the requirements of ditterent classes of wearers so that. the same garment, as to pocket construction and functions, will be acceptable to all.

A practical embodiment of my invention embraces a pocket provided with an opening in its side through which a watch may be introduced or removed, a flap for the pocket, buttoning means for the iiap, a scab bard pocket located inside of the main pocket and arranged so that it will not interfere with the use of the full width of the pocket,

and an opening, such as a button hole, in the Hap and disposed so that a pencil or the like may be introduced through said opening into the scabbard pocket or re` moved therefrom without unbuttoning the flap; and permitting the flap to be unbuttoned and raised without removing the pencil, the pencil neither interfering with, or being affected by, the removal of the contents of the main pocket or with the opera tion of the watch chain through the side opening. This practical embodiment includes the disposition of the scabbard pocket in such relationship to the side opening in the main vpocket that when the pencil is in position, it minimizes thek danger of accidental or unauthorized removal of the watch through-theside opening because the pencil then constitutes an efficient guard for the side pocket-opening.

Figure-'1 is a :front elevation of a pocket made according to my invention, the flap being buttoned but no pencil being shown.

Fig. 2 is a front elevation, the front ot the pocket being broken away and the flap turned back, a watch being shown in the pocket and a pencil in the scabbard pocket.

Fig. 3 is a cross section through Fig. 2 illustrating the manner in which the pencil serves as a guard for the side opening oi the pocket; and

A piece of the shirt, jacket, or bib-overalls, or other garment provided with the pocket is shown at l.

The pocket 2 is connected by stitching 3 to the garment 1 along its three sides but open at its top 4 and at its side along a part of the length thereof as shown at 5.

The omission of the stitching as indicated at 5, although the pocket is stitched at its upper lett hand corner 6, provides a suitable opening in the side of the pocket through which a watch 7 may be readily introduced or removed, thus meeting the requirements of one class of wearers, for instance railroadmen.

A flap 8 which is stitched at 9 to the garment l, a-lfords a suitable closure for the full width of the pocket. Suitable means for :fastening the flap 8, for instance a button l0 and button hole l1, enables the wearer to secure in the pocket any papers or other contents without interfering with the introduction or removal of the watch 7, thus meeting other requirements of users.

A scabbard pocket l2 is stitched to the garment at 13 and 14 and runs the full depth ot the pocket as shown in Fig. 2, the mouth l5 of the scabbard pocket terminating in the general region of the mouth ot' the main pocket.

An opening 16, preferably a button hole, is provided in the flap 8 in line with the mouth 15 and in the general region of the stitching 9 for the flap so that wnen the flap is closed as shown in Figs. l and 4, or when it is open, as shown in Fig. 2, a pencil 17 may be introduced into the scabbard pocket 12, or allowed to remain, as the case may be, without interfering with the flap S. For instance, if the `flap 8 is closed, the pencil may be introduced through the opening 16 into the scabloard pocket 12 without requiring the flap S to be nnbnttoned. It the Hap 8 is raised when the pencil 17 is in position as shown in Fig. 2, there is no interference with the pencil nor does the pencil prevent the flap from being raised or lowered at will; thus, the contents of the pocket are accessible without disturbing the pencil. The location of the scahbard pocket 12 in the region of the side vopening enables the pencil 17 to forni a safety closure for the opening 5 as will be understood from Figs. 2 and 3, thus preventing the watch T from dropping out if the wearer of the garment assumes a stooping posture and, also, unauthorized removal of the watch is inade difficult.

I claim:

1. A pocket having a side opening at one edge and provided with an interior scabbard pocket which is narrow relatively to the width o'l said pocket, said scabloard pocket being located at the same edge as said side opening so that an article introduced into said scabbard pocket will have a closing or sealing effect on said side opening.

2. A pocket having a side opening at one edge and provided with an interior scabbard pocket which is narrow relatively to the width of said pocket, said scabbard pocket being located at the saine edge as said side opening so that an article introduced into said scabbard pocket will have a closing or sealing efect on said side opening, and a flap for the pockets, said Hap being provided with an opening through which a pencil or other article may be introduced into the scabhard pocket when the flap is closed and which will permit the flap to be opened while such artcle is in the sca-bbard pocket.
