PATENT OFFICE.
max J. mammon'nor BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
WOMANS HAND BAG 0B POCKETBOOK.
Application filed November 28, 1927. Serial No. 236,075.
This invention relates to womens pocket books or hand bags and has for its principal object to provide a hand bag or similar article in which a secret pocket is contained adapted to be entirely concealed from view and which can not be easily discovered.
\Vith pocket books of this character as hitherto constructed, the location of the secret pocket is such that the presence thereof is easily betrayed.
This drawback is obviated with this invention.
lVith this and other objects in view my invention substantially consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, as will be hereinaftermore fully described and defined in the appended claims.
My invention will be more fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawing which constitutes part of this specification and in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts, Fig. 1 being a perspective view of the improved pocket book showing the secret pocket concealed; Fig. 2 asimilar view to Fig. 1 of a part of the pocket book showing the secret pocket opened and Fig. 3 is a, cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing 10 and 11 denote respectively the front and back portion of the pocket book, in which as usual, a plurality of pockets are provided, the construction of which, however, need not be described, as they do not form part of this invention. 12 denotes the flap formed by the extension of the back portion 11 of the pocket book and adapted to fold over the front portion 10 to close the pocket book.
Attached at its side edges and bottom edge as at 13, 13 to and covering the entire inner face of said back port-ion 11 is a flexible member 13. The upper end of said member is extended as at 13 to also cover a part of the inner face of the flap 12 and is attached thereto at its side edges, as at 13 so that said member 13 forms with said back portion 11 and with the lower part of the flap. 12 a pocket 14 (Fig. 3) adapted to be concealed from view when the pocket book is opened. To this end I provide a second flexible member 15 which is suitably attached at its bottom and side edges to and extends over the front face of that part of the member 12 which covers only the back part 11, but not the flap 12. This second member 15 together with the mentioned portion of the member 13 will thus form a second pocket 16 which is adapted to be visible when the pocket book is opened. The inner lining 17 of the flap 12, of suitable material, usually of leather, is stitched to the flap 12 along its upper edge, as at 17 and along its side edges, as at 17 The'side stitches 17 do not extend all the way down but terminate slightly short off the upper end of the member 13, as at 17 The lower unattached portion of the lining 17 is extended as at 17 beyond the lower end of the flap 12, and is slightly reduced in width, as at 17 so that it may freely and easily pass into the Visible pocket 16, as shown in Fig. 3, in order to conceal the presence of pocket 14. WVhen extending into this visible pocket 16 it bears against the outer face of the member 13, so that said extended part 17 appears to be the lining or rear wall of said pocket and does not betray the presence of the pocket 14;.
' To open or uncover the secret pocket 14 the'extended part or flap 1'? is pulled out from the pocket 16 and folded or rolled upwardly, as shown in Fig. 2.
I do not wish to restrict myself to the de tails of the construction shown and described, since various modifications may be made without departing from the principle of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. A womans pocket book or the like, comprising a body having a front and back portion, the back portion being extended to form a flap adapted to fold over the front ortion, two adjacent pockets between said ront and back portions, one of said pockets serving as a secret pocket and having its back wall formed-by the back of said body and a part of said flap and a lining for said flap having an unattached extended portion at its lower end adapted to be passed into said other pocket so as to conceal the pres ence of said secret pocket.
2. A womans pocket book or the like, comprising a body having a front and back portion, said back portion being extended to form a flap adapted to fold over said front portion, a flexible member stitched along .its side edge and bottom to and extending over the entire inner face of said back portion and over the inner face of a part of said flap to form a secret pocket, at lining converging the inner face of said flap and attached thereto at its side edges and upper end edge, part a second pocket, the extended part of: the lower end of said flap being unattached said lining being adapted to be passed into and extended below the upper edge of said said second pocket and to thereby conceal flexible member and a second flexible memthe presence of the secret pocket.
5 her in said body which extends over the part In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
of the front wall of said secret pocket confined within the body and forming with said MAX J. MARYMONT.
