UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEe ABRAHAM BJOCK, OF BLOOMFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
SAFETY POCKET.
Application led December 22, 1923.
To eolzom it may concern.'
Be 1t known that I, ABRAHAM BLOCK, a
of Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Pockets, of'which the following is a speciication.
The objects of this invention are to Secure an improved safety pocket which shall 'render it impossible for a pickpocket to remove the contents without attracting the attention of the wearer; to insure that any attempt to pick the pocket of its contents shall attract the attention ot' the wearer; to combine with a closed compartment and an open'compartment trom which the pickpocket canfeel the contents, so that he will attempt to pull the pocket inside out, special means for causing such a pull to be felt by the wearer; to provide a simple and practical construction for securing such results, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out by the following description.
Referring to the accompanying` drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several views,
Figure l is an outside view of the upper part of a pair of trousers having side and hip pockets embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is an inside view of the same;
Figure 3 is a front view ot such trousers upon a wearer and partly broken away to show the pull ot attempting to turn a side pocket inside out;
Figure 4 is a similar view from the rear illustrating the pull of attempting to turn a hip pocket inside out;
Figure 5 is a detail section horizontally through the upright ede'e ot the side pocket next to the fly of the trousers, looking from the front;
Figure 6 is a similar section of the hip pocket, on line 6 6, Figure 2;
Figure 7 is a horizontal cross-section of the side pocket, with the closed compartment open;
Figure 8 is a similar cross-section with said closed compartment shut, and
Fi re 9 is a vertical cross-section through the hip pocket, with the closed compartment o en. y pin the specific embodiment of the invention shown in said drawings, 1 indicates a pair of trousers having a side pocket 2 with Serial No. 682,157.
a median partition 3 inn its plane dividing the pocket into compartments 4 and 5, said partition being thin enough so that a pocketbook 6 or other valuable in one compartment can be plainly telt by a hand inserted in the othercompartment. One compartment is provided with concealed means for closing the entrance to it, while the other compartment is left open so that a hand ay be readily inserted into it. Obviousl either compartment may be the open one and the other the closed one, but in the present drawings I have shown the inner compartment 4, next the wearer, open and the other one 5 closed. Furthermore, any suitable means known to the art may be used at the entrance to the closed compartment lfor covering and concealing it,` but for illustration I have shown. scc Figures 7 and 8, the side ot the partition 3 next the closed compartment 5 provided at the mouth of said compartment with a tiap 7 and cooperating separable fasteners suchas snap member 8, 9 and button' and button-hole l0, 11 for releasably securing it to the outer vwall 12 of therpooket. Another flap 13 secured to the edge ot said outer wall 12 is provided tofold inwardly overl the margin of the partiti n Band be secured thereto as by snap mem ers 14, 15. This covers and: conceals the t'ntr'ance to the compartment 5, while leaving the entrance to the other compartment t open and easily entered by the hand.
The edge of the side pocket 2 is according to my invention connected to the crotch of the trousers, preferably to the seam 16 thereat and preferably it is the lower part of the pocket whichis thus connected. This may be done in any suitable way, but I have shown it accomplished, see Figure 2, more especially, by continuing the outer wall 12 ci the pocket to that portion of the seam -16 at which the Hy 17 is located, as a connecting web 18. While this connecting web is shown as extending from the lower end of the pocket 2 all the way to its top, it is obvious that it could extend any desired dis tance upward from said lower end, without affecting its function of causing a pull up on the crotch of the trousers when any atu tempt is made to turn the pocket inside out.
It will be understood that in using my invention the pocket book 6 or other valuable is placed in the closed compartment 5, as shown in Figure 3, so that 1i a pickpocket mit inserts his hand into. the other, or open,
, cieaiiy iustratcd in Figure 3, and attracts' the attention of the wearer. The attempt of the pickpooket is thus frustrated by the use ot my invention, and the contents of the ocket savede l I My invention is just as applicable to., a hip pocket es to e side ocket, and such an aplication' is 'also il ustrated inthe drawings, the reference numerai 20 indicating s hip pocket which hes s'middie partition 2l, see Figure 9, dividing it into outer and inneroompartrnents 22, 23, the outer one having an interior closing Hap 24 finden exte rior closing iap 25 both like those already described.- end by which the outer compartment can be securely closed 'and conceaied.
lThe usual pocket iap 26 is lshown.provided for the entire pocket, as is usual, but this 'has no eeetivenessin closing the open comertment 23 against ckpockets. The ower end of the hi poc et 20 is connected as by a strip 27 to t e crotch seam 16 of the trousers, and the operation of it in pulling upon seid seam to attract the attention of the wearer when@ pickpocket attempts to.
turn the hipl ocket inside `out is exactly the same as alrea y described in connection with the side pocket 2. Obviously, both of the Meeste in? of o pair of trousers een 'ne connfccteii to the crotch scorn if desired, as
have inicatedin Figure 4, and both side 'ochets con be constructed like the one I ave shown anni described. Obvions my improved pocket can be opplieti to ot er garments than trousers, and verions modifications or changes can he :manie in the-detail construction of the in* volition. Without departing, from the spirit and scope thereof, Therefore do not do sire to he nmieretooii es hi'nitingY myself except es` requircfi by vthe oiiowing cienns 'when oonstrnefi in the-iight of the prior srt.
Having 'thus desorihed the invention, what clsimis: v l. in. e germenjt, the combination ot a pocket having one end scoured tossici garment adiacenti its mouth, s, secret compartment directly associated with' the pocket IVand so arranged that its contents may beA :telt therefrom, and va. connection from the the open compartment, andI a connection' from the other .end ot said pocket to e portion of the garment to pull upon the wearer when an attempt is mede to turn the pocket inside out.
