Application September 5, 1931, Serial No. 561,471
6 Claims.
This invention relates to garments and has relation more particularly to pocket'structures, it being primarily an object of the invention to provide a pocket structure of a character to pre vent unauthorized access within a pocket or the removal therefrom of an article therein.
The invention also has for an object to provide a pocket structure wherein the entrance opening therefor is effectively closed.
7 An additional object of the invention is to provide trousers or other kindred nether garments With suitably positioned pockets, the structure of each of the pockets being such to prevent unauthorized removal of an article therefrom.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a garment, such astrousers, comprising a belt in its construction together with pockets having associated therewith means coactingwith the belt for closing the pockets against entry.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of-my improved garment whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. i
' The novel features of my invention will hereinafter'be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:- 1
Figure 1 is a fragmentary View in elevation of the upper portion of a pair of trousers constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, certain of the pockets being shown opened;
Figure 2 is a view in elevation from inside of the upper portion of the garment as herein disclosed;
I Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in front elevation of a garment constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention with a belt applied and showing certain of the pockets held closed by said belt;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 1 illustrating certain details of construction as herein embodied;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 55 of Figure 1; I V
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional View taken substantially on the line 6-45 of Figure 2; V
Figure 7 is a sectional View taken through the upper portion ofthe garment and substantially on the line 'l-'l of Figure 1;
Figure 8 is an elevational View of the upper portion of the garment as herein disclosed showing the flap for the sidepocket inwardly disposed to produce a conventional pocket of this kind; Figure 9 is a fragmentary view in plan of a portion of a leg section partially completed;
Figure 10 is an elevational View of an insert comprised in the structure as illustrated in Figure 9 unapplied;
Figure 11 is a view in elevation of aportion of a leg of the'trousers partly constructed; 7 Figure '12 is a view in elevation of an insert as comprised in the structure illustrated in Figure 11 unapplied. Asdisclosed in the accompanying drawings, A denotes afront piece of material comprised in the building of trousers and B a rear piece. The upper or Waist band portion of the front piece A i's'p'rovided With an'inwardly disposed cut I affording a free flap 2 whereby the entrance through aside pocket may be readily closed when desired. The outer marginal portion of this flap 2 has secured thereto apiece 3 of material, preferably of the same character as the goods of which trousers are made. This piece 3'is adapted to overlie the inner face of the flap 2 and is secured thereto along its marginal portions except at the outer edges of the flap 2 whereby is provided a casing lthrough which a belt 5 is adapted to be directed to maintain the flap 2 inits raised or closed position with respect to the body portion of thetrousers.
Fitting Within the portion of the piece A provided with the cut I is an insert 6 of proper dimensions .and configuration and which in the complete garment provides a proper finish for the entrance portion to the side pocket. The lower portion. of the insert 6 is adapted to have secured thereto a marginal portion of the pocket proper which is otherwise secured to the garment in a well known manner.
As'illustrated in the drawings this insert 6 is provided thereacross with a slit 1 affording an entrance to the secret or safety pocket and disposed above and immediately adjacent to this slit 1' is a facing .strip or band 8. As the slit l .and the strip or band 8 form no particularpart of the present invention it is not believed that a 'detailed'description and illustration thereof is necessary. I l
i The corner'portions of the flap 2, or more particularly the finishing piece 3, has secured thereto the fastening members 9 herein disclosed as 20 to provide an entrance to the pocket 2!.
conventional snaps, and which are adapted to engage the associated fastening members in secured to the waist band portion of the garment whereby the flap 2 is effectively held in its raised or closed position. When in its raised or closed position the flap 2 effectively conceals the slit or out i.
When it is desired to have the side pocket of a normal appearance the flap 2 may be inserted inwardly of the pocket, as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 8, with the fastening members 9 engaged with suitably positioned coacting fastening members I! carried by the outer wall of the pocket proper.
The upper portion of the rearpiece B is inwardly out on angularly related lines a and b and stitched to the lines a and b of the body portion proper of the piece is an insert [2. This insert I2 provides a finish for the entrance to the pocket it secured to the insert and to the garment proper as required. The outer margin of the portion 0 of the garment separated by the pieces A and B has secured thereto a piece I5 of material to overlie and finish the inner face of this portion 0. a p
After the insert l2 has been applied the portions of the materialalongthe'inner line b are again connected, thus allowing the upper part of the portion 0 to provide a flap It for closing the entrance to the pocket M. The piece I5 is secured to the portion c of the material alongits upper and lower marginal portions to provide a loop or casing I! through which the belt is adapted to be inserted to maintain the flap l6 raised. The flap H3 in its inner wall, or more particularly the piece it, carriesthe snaps l8 for engagement with the members l9 arranged on thewaist band portion of the garment for positively holding the flap I 65 inits lifted or raised position.
'The insert i 2 is also provided with a cut or slit The slit 20 has associated therewith and for the same purpose a band or strip 22 similar to the band or strip 8 hereinbefore referred to.
The, body portion of the piece B at a desired point therealong is provided with .a conventional rear or hip pocket; generally indicated at 23, and
which pocket is also provided with a strip or band 24 coacting with the entrance thereto for the same purpose as the band 8. This band 24, however, at its central part is provided with a snap 25 for coaction with a member 26 carried by the garment proper for positively locking the band against lifting or raising. 1
The side pocket 21 proper as particularly illustrated in Figure 2 is formed at the waist band portion of the garment with a. supplemental pocket 28 adapted to be closed by the flap 29. The flap 29 overlies the outer wallof the pocket 21 and is provided with a buttonhole 30 to engage over the button 3| carried by the inner wall of said pocket 21. The outer wall of the pocket also'has a buttonhole 32 to engage over the button 3| to further maintain'closed the entrance to this pocket 28.
t is believed to be obvious that a garment provided with pockets constructed in accordance with my invention and particularly as herein described and illustrated substantially eliminates unauthorized entrance to a pocket when the garment is being worn and thus particularly assuring safety and protection against pickpockets.
It is also believed to be clearly apparent that a garment constructed as herein described afiords a materially attractive appearance and that the character and arrangement of the parts in no way interfere with the beauty of the garment. It is to be stated at this time that the efiiciency of the strip or band 8 together with the similar strips or bands mentioned is materially facilitated by having the ends of the band or strip secured to the material above and below the slit or cut.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a garment constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of r the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood aslimiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
