Description

A. F EIT POCKET July 11, 1939.
Filed Oct. 24, 1938 v INVENTOR.
. YTORNEY.
Patented July 11, 1939 UNITED TA ES PATENT orFrc-s POCKET i Abraham Felt, Brooklyn, N. '2.
Application cm 24,1938, Serial No. sass-1s 1 cm- (or. 2-253) accessible through the slitted opening at the side.
of the garment which also gives access to the regv ular pocket. Owing to the fact that the slider and the metal parts of the tapes as shown in that patent are exposed 'on the intermediate wall it has been found that the said parts are harsh to the hand when inserted in the regular pocket. and
are not fully obscured from view in some wearing positions assumed by the clothadjacent the slitted opening.
with the object of overcoming the foregoing B0 objections I provide a cover for the metal parts in the form of a strip of cloth fast to the main body portion of the garment and facing the opposite wall of the regular pocket, the strip or flap being readily movable by the inserted fingers to B5 permit operation of the slide, while at the same time providing a shield during ordinary insertion and withdrawal of the hand.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is-afront view of the pocket portion with parts broken away of a pair of trousers incorporating my invention;
Figure 2 a cross section on the line 22 of Figure 1, and,
Figure 3 a fragmentary rear view of a pair of trousers illustrating the application of the invention to a rear pocket.
In the drawing which is merely exemplary of one practical form of the invention the reference numeral ll indicates in general that section ofa pair of trousers adjacent the front right-hand pocket. A regular or main pocket It and a secondary or safety pocket l2 are each adapted to be entered through the usualslitted opening I: at the side of the garment, and form in effect a pocket within a pocket. This double pocket .comprises a rear wall I, an intermediate wall I5, and
a front wall I, all three of which are fastened together at a common point II forming one edge of the double pocket. The intermediate wall or partition ll includes two sections l8 and I! detachably secured together by tapes 2| and 2| having interlocking fastening elements 22' oper- I .tener elements 22.
ated by a slider 22 in the usual well known manner for engaging and disengaging the elements. The rear wall II and the outer edge of the cloth section I! are secured at 24 to the body portion 25 of the garment adj cent the opening II. The 5 front wall It includesa facing piece 28 the outer edge of which issecured to the front cloth 2? at 22. 3
In order to shield the fastening elements 22: and the slider 22 there is provided a strip of ma- 10 'terial such as cloth 2! preferably fastened by rows of stitches at the points I. and 2| to the intel-mediate wall It butunsecured at its top and bottom edges so as to form a free flap overlying the metal parts so that the hand may have free access to the pocket |l without contacting the fastening elements 22 or the slider 2!,as will be readily seen from a consideration of Figure 2'. Preferably the facing as is coextensive with the shield to. provide cooperating shielding pieces for so the hand at opposite sides of the pocket opening.
when it is desired to have access to the secondary pocket l2, the flap 29 is easily movable by'the fingers to the position approximating that indicated by the dot-and-dash lines in Figures 1 and 25 2, wherein the entire flap from top to bottom is folded over to the left of its normal covering position, and the slider 22 then moved downward from the Figure 1 position to disengage the fas-' 30 It will be noted also in the drawing that the fastening elements 22 of the partition l5 are located at a point well inward from the mouth ll of the main pocket ll, providing a'substantial margin of material between the fastening means 35 22 andthe vertical line of stitches 2|. This permits sufhcient freedom to allow the element car-' rying'portionsof the'partition ii to expand or bulge away from the rear wall I when entering the hand into the safety pocket through the 40 opening provided by disengaging the fastening elements, thereby facilitating entry and withdrawal of .the hand. The shield portion extending across the section 19 functions both as a reenforcement and a finishing piece for the inside 5 of the-main pocket, while the flap portion provides a smooth lining-over the fastening means and tends to prevent impressions of the latter from appearing in the outer cloth of the garment. Also, it will be seen from the drawing that the 50 vertical line of stitches ll forming the hinge of the flap is located well inward from the mouth I! of the main pocket H, whereby the flap is at all times concealed within the confines of the main pocket, and that the flap is freely foldable 55 along its entire length to aifordeasy access to the fastening means.
Figure 3 illustrates the application of the invention to the rear pocket for instance of a garment in which the protective flap 2. extends crosswise and may be lifted readily to give finger room for operating the slider 23.
The invention may be embodied in numerous other ways, and therefore is not limited in its applications except as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent:
A double pocket construction for a garment, comprising a main pocket and a safety pocket including front and rear walls and a partition separating the main pocket from the safety pocket, said partition having an opening, the-edges of the material at opposite sides of said opening being provided with tapes having interlocking fastening elements adapted to be engaged and disengaged by operation of aslider, and a shield extending inward from the mouth of the main pocket and including a flap portion normally covering the fastening means and being foldable and being also connected by a second vertical line of stitches to said partition forming a hinge connection for the flap at a point well inward from the mouth of the main pocket, whereby said flap is concealed whether folded toward the mouth of the main pocket or unfolded to cover the fastening means, said flap portion being free at its top and bottom edg'es affording 'foldability along its entire length to uncover the fastening means for operation, said fastening elements also being located well inward from the mouth of the main pocket providing a substantial width of partition material between the fastening elements and said first named vertical line of stitches, whereby the element carrying portion of the partition has freedom to bulge substantially away from the rear wall of the pocket and thereby provide for easy entry of the hand through the opening resulting from disengaging the fastening elements.
