UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN V. VHIIAKER, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
GLOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 348,806, dated September 7l 1836,
Application filed March Q2, 1886.
To all whom it party concern,.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN V. WHITAIIER, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference .being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Y Figure l is a perspective View of a glove, seen from the back, showing myimprovement. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing portions of the glove separated for the purpose of showing more plainly the shape of the inserted textile piece and its attachment, and Fig. 3 is a diagram of the textile piece.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of gloves in which the glove is provided with a Wristband and a Hap projecting up into the body of the glove, the said Wristband A and ilap consisting of an elastic textile material, and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such aglove, hav ing an elast-ic textile Wristband formed with a flap inserted into the back of the glove and extending into two lingers, forming the backs of these two fingers, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letterA indicates the body of the glove, which has a portion cut out in its back, and which likewise has the backs of the second and third fingers cnt out. The cut-out portions of the glove are iilled out with a ilap and two finger-pieces, which flap is lettered B, and the iinger-pieces O O, and this ilap and finger-pieces project from a Wristband, I), which is attached to the lower edge ofthe glove. The edges ofthe wristband and the flap and iinger-pieces,all of which are made outy of one piece of textile fabric,
Serial No. 196,158. (No model.) l
preferably elastic, are stitched to the edges of the glove, which is generally ofleather or skin, and the textile inserted portion is preferably made of a piece of knitted goods knitted with a selvage, although it may be made from any textile material which is sufficiently elastic to allow a certain amount of yield in put-ting on and taking off the glove.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to have gloves made with a texile Wristband formed with a Hap or extension extending into the body portion of the glove; and I am likewise aware that mittens have been made in 'which the back consists of a textile fabric,
while the palm portion and inside of the thumb is made ot' leather; and I am also aware that gloves or mittens have been made with a leather or skin lining for the palm and inner sides of the fingers, and I do not wish to make broad claims for backing a glove with a textile material; but I am not aware that gloves have been made in which the textile wristband is provided with a flap or extension which has its outer end divided so as to form the baeking for the second and third lingers, whereby the glove may be made at a low cost and be warm and durable, while allowing free play for the ingers; and A I therefore claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesm The combination, with a glove having the back of the hand and two fingers cut away, of a piece of fabric shaped to provide a strip for the back of the hand, `which strip terlninates in'two strips of unequal length for the back of the two fingers and joins the Wristband near one end thereof, but at a less distance from said end than from the other.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDVIN V. VVHIT AKER.
