Description

W. F. FOSTER.
GLOVES.
N. 178 5ZQ Patented. June 13', 1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIon.
WILLIAM F. FOSTER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,520, dated June 13, 1876; application filed April 25,-1876.j
panying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification,
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in gloves; and the invention consists in constructing the wrist of a glove with a series of studs, and a cord and ring or ball, whereby the wrist of the glove may be drawn and confined together in the manner hereinafter more particularly described.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure represents .a plan or top view of 'my invention.
As is well known it is ditficult to draw together and confine the wrist of snug-fitting gloves, and that, in most instances, the buttons, catches, or other fastenings at present used, are unequal to the strain brought upon them, and they soon give way.
To remedy these difficulties I attach to the wrist A of .a glove, and on the edge a of each side of the opening b, a series of small studs or hooks, B. These studs or hooks may be of any suitable material, and are riveted or otherwise firmly secured to the wrist of the glove, and if studs are used they are formed with a head, 0, on them. Attached to one of the lower studs, or to the lower part of the wrist of the glove, is a cord, 0. This cord has a ring, d, or ball secured to its upper end. When the glove is in place on the hand, the cord 0 is passed across the opening I) of the wrist, and around the studs or hooks alternately from one side of the opening to the other, as shown in the figure, and upon drawingthe upper end of the cord the edges of the wrist are brought snugly together, in which position they are held by winding the cord 0 around one of the upper studs or hooks, and passing the ring d or ball over the stud, or around the book, which will keep the cord tightly confined, and the opening of the wrist closed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by providing the wrist of a glove with studs or hooks, cord, and ring or ball, in the manner described, the gloves may be fastened with facility, and since the strain is borne by a series of studs or hooks, instead of one or two buttons, they are not likely to give way. Besides, by this construction, there are no button-holes to tear out, so that the fastening will always be in order to secure the glove.
On account of ditference in the sizes of persons wrists, and the elasticity of material of which gloves are composed, the buttons or fastenings in common use are very imperfect for the purpose, while by using my invention instead, the elasticity is gradually taken up, and the cuffs adapted to the difference in size of the wrists.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture, the glove with the wrist-opening provided with studs on each side of the same, and a lacing cord or cords secured by one end to one of the studs, and having a ring or ball on the other end, whereby saidopening may be laced without the use of eyelets, substantially as shown and described.
