PATENT OFFI E.
GLOVE.I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,743, dated September 22, 1903. Application filed May 26, 1902. Serial No. 108,942. (No model.)
To all whom it inn/y concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. Tnonrson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kentand State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in gloves, and more especially to workingmens gloves or gloves adapted to be subjected to hard usage; and its object is to so locate the seams as to subject them to as little wear as possible and also to locate them where they will not chafe the hand of the wearer, to produce a glove having as few seams and as few parts as possible, to cut the material economically, and to provide the same with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention consists, essentially, in the construction and arrangement of 'parts constituting the glove, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a glove embodying my invention and viewed from the palm side; Fig. 2, the same reversed, showing the back side; Fig. 3, a diagram of the blank forming the principal part of the glove; Fig. 4, the same of the blank forming the back of the thumb and a portion of the back of the glove, and Fig. 5 the same of the blank forming the inner portion of the fingers E and F of the glove.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
The blank shown in Fig. 3 consists of a suitable piece of material cut as illustrated in the drawings. A portion A forms the palm of the glove. B is the inner portion of the thumb. C is the inner portion of the first finger; O, the outer portion of the same. D isthe inner portion of the fourth finger; D, the outer portion of the same; E, the outer portion of the third finger, and F the outer portion of the second finger.
The portions G and H form the back of the glove, excepta portion comprising about onefourth ofthe same and located between the thumb and the wrist, which latter is formed by the portion Let the blank shown in Fig. at.
The portions D and G are severed from the palm portion, asindicated at J and I, to permit the turning of said portions between the fingers to form the first and fourth fingers of the glove complete.
The blank shown in Fig. 4 has a portion M, adapted to form the back of the thumb, and a portion L of suitable form to complete the back of the glove.
- The inner portions of the fingers E and F are formed of the blank shown in Fig. 5, which consists of an oblong oval-shaped piece partially divided at the base of the fingers, as shown at K. The undivided portion is folded and comes between the second and third fingers, and the severed portion at K is joined to the palm portion of the blank at J and I. An inset piece P, Fig. 1, is inserted in this seam to protect the same from wear.
The seam between the portions B and M is provided with a welt N.
When completed, the glove has no seams exposed to wear except the short seam crossing the middle fingers where united to the palm, which seam is protected by an inset P. All of the seams of the fingers, as shown at S, S, S", and S, are at the back of the fingers, where they are not exposed to wear and where they do not thicken the structure bein Fig. 3, being nearly square in form and the other two pieces of such form that the stock will out with great economy, also that very few seams are required in making up the glove, and that these seams are located where they will neither chafe the hand or become worn by exposure or by contact with whatever may be grasped by the hand wearing the glove.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A glove comprising an integral piece having a middle portion forming the palm, also having a portion forming the inner side of the thumb, also having marginal portions forming a part of the back of the glove and the backs of the second and third fingers, also having intermediate portions forming the entire first and fourth fingers; a thumb-piece forming the back of the thumb and the balance of the back, and finger-pieces forming the inner portions of the second and third fingers.
2. A glove consisting of an integral piece, extending wholly around the hand and joined at the edges by a seam extending from between the seoond and third fingers to the wrist, and having marginal portions forming the backs of the second and third fingers and the major portion of the back, and also having intermediate portions partially severed from the palms and forming the entire first and fourth fingers and also having seams adjacent to the second and third fingers and also having a portion forming the palm and inner part of the thumb, a thumb-piece attaehed to the first-named integral piece at its margins and forming the back of the thumb and the balance of the back of the glove, and finger-pieces forming the inner portions of the second and'third fingers and attached at their margins to the first-named piece.
In testimony whereof I affixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
