Be it known that I, THOMAS ORNAs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Gloves, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawing accompanying and forming a part hereof, is a full and complete description, sutlicient to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to understand, make, and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements on the glove set. out in Letters Patent No. 635,269, granted to Perlinsky on the 17th of October, 1899. The said Perlinsky glove having the palm, full thumb and full first finger formed of a single piece, which is also provided with the front and inside of the little finger, and having the back of the hand and the backs of the second, third and little fingers formed of a single piece, and the front oruinside of the second and third fingers formed of additional pieces.

Among the objects of my improvements are, to obtain a glove requiring few pieces, and those which would otherwise resemble each other shaped so that duplicates are used; to so make the seams of the glove as to interfere as little as possible with the free bending of the glove with the hand of the wearer, to make said seams so that the seams are not annoying or hurtful to the wearer; and to make the several pieces of the glove of such shape and having such relation to each other that in the sewing of said pieces together, in a determined sequence, that the seams required may be readily made on an ordinary sewing machine, and to obtain a glove having great wearing qualities.

The invention consists in the matters herein set forth and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

As shown in the drawing, Figure 1, is the front view of a blank for the palm, full.

F ig. 2 is a front View of a blank for the back of the body of the glove and the back of the second, third and fourth fingers. Fig. 8 is a plan view of duplicate blanks joined together by stitching, said blanks forming the fronts and sides of the second and third fingers of the glove. Fig. 4 is a plan View of a blank, duplicates of which respectively cover the seams of the fronts of the second and third fingers and extend from the root of the thumb over the back of the first finger. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the seam joining the duplicate pieces which form the fronts and sides of the second and third fingers to the blank forming the palm, thumb, first finger and the front and one side of the fourth finger, showing the inside (or. wrong side), of a portion of said duplicate pieces, and the outside (or right side), of a portion of said blank. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing the outside of a portion of the blanks forming the palm and back of the glove, with the duplicate pieces which form the fronts and sides of the second and third fingers turned up, to show the outside of said duplicate pieces and of an additional piece which is j oined thereto, and also showing a portion of the thumb and the outside of the seam between said blanks forming the front and back of the glove from the root of the thumb to outside the first finger,

with a duplicate of the additional piece which is joined to the fronts of the second and third fingers stitched over said seams.

Fig. 7 is a sectional view on lines 7-7 of- Fig. 6 viewed in the direct-ion indicated by the arrows, and Fig. 8 is a sectional view on lines 8 8 of Fig. 6 viewed in the direction indicated by the arrows.

The blank shown in Fig. l consists of the body or palm a, having thereon the extensions b, c, (Z; The extensions Z) and c are separated by the cuts and 2; the extension c is separated from the extension (Z by the space 8; the extensions c and d are separated from the palm a on the sides of said extension adjacent to the space 8, by cuts ll and 5 respectively.

6 is a notch at the lower end of the palm a and extension b. The extension has the notch 7 therein and extension c is provided with notch 8. To form the thumb the lower' edge of extension Z) is turned or folded so that the right hand edge of the same registers with the edge formed by the cuts 1 and 2. To form the full first finger the outer right hand edge of extension o is turned, or folded so as to register with its left hand edge.

The blank shown in Fig. 2 consists of the top or back A having thereon the extensions D, E, F and G, cut 9 the curved edges 10 and 11 and the side edges 12 and 13. The

duplicate blanks illustrated in Figs. 3, 5, 6, and 7 are lettered respectively e, These duplicate parts are respectively provided with the extensions 14 and 15, and extension 15 is provided with the curved edge 16. The extensions 14 and 15 are separated by the space 17. These duplicate parts e and f are respectively provided with the straight sides 18 and 19 and the curved side 20. These blanks e, f, are shown in Fig. 8 with blank folded over on itself on the line indicated by broken lines 21; and said blanks are of greater width than the extensions E, F, on blank A, so as to form the front and sides of the second and third fingers when said blanks are stitched to blanks a, A, respectively.

22, Fig. 8 is a broken line which indicates the stitching by means of which said blanks are oined togetherbefore they are stitched to blank a; and 23, Fig. 5 is a broken line indicating the stitching by means of which said blanks e, f, together with an additional blank, (blank H, Fig. 4), and blank a are joined together. After the blanks e, f, are joined to the blank a by stitching 23 they are turned up from the position illustrated in F ig. 5 into the position illustrated in Figs. G and 7 thereby bringing the said additional blank into position on the outer side of the glove at the base of the second and third fingers, to receive wear and also to protect the seam made by said stitching. 24, Figs. 1, 2 and 8, are broken lines indicatingthe stitching by means of which the curved edge 10 of blank (,Fig. 2 is joined to the edge obtained by the cuts 1 and 2 of blank a which is on the first finger side of said cuts. 25, 25, are broken lines ind'icating` the stitching wherebyblank H is stitched in place over the seam made by stitching 24, covering said seam and joining said blank H to blanks a, A, to receive wear and protect said seam. By the above described stitching 24 joining blanks a, A, and the stitching 25 joining blanks 8 to blanks a, A, a smooth seam particularly on the inside is made.

26, Figs. 1, 2 and 6, are broken lines indicating` the stitching by means of which the edge obtained by cuts 1 and 2, (on the thumb side of said cuts), and the curved edge adjacent to said cut 1, and to cut 7, are

joined together and to the curved edge of extension b which is adjacent to said cut 7; and the remainder of said curved edge of extension b and the curved edge 11 of blank a are joined together.

27-27 are broken lines, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, indicating the stitching by means of which blanks a, A, the extensions d, D, blank e and extension E, blank f, and extension F, and the edges of extension c are joined together.

Then the stitching Operations 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27, are made in the order in which the same are above described said stitching may all be readily made on an ordinary sewing machine.

lVrist blanks may be attached to the lower edge of the glove formed as above described, or the wrist portion of said glove may be finished in any other suitable form, said wrist blanks or wrist portion forming no part of this invention.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is As a new article of manufacture a hand covering consisting of a blank provided with a palm, with an integral full thumb part, full first finger part and the front and one side of the fourth finger part; a blank provided with a back and integral parts for the backs of the second, third and fourth fingers, said blanks stitched together so that the seam from the root of the thumb to and back of the first finger is on the outside of said hand covering, and duplicate blanks for the front and sides of the second and third fingers, in combination with additional duplicate blanks, one of said additional blanks stitched over the seam which joins the front and back blanks so as to extend from the root of the thumb to back of the first finger, and arranged to cover and protectsaid seam, and the other additional blank placed in the seam which joins the first named duplicate blanks to the front blank, and arranged to cover and protect said seam; substantially as described.
