To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLEs W. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kewan'ee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a glove and more particularly to a working glove of the gauntlet type, the principal object residing in pro tecting the palm and fingers with a covering of leather or similar material.

Another object consists in so cutting and securing the material forming the protecting covering as to cover the entire palm of the glove as well as the front, sides, back and crotch surfaces of the fingers.

A further object consists in constructing both the body of the glove as well as the protecting covering from blanks cut in a novel manner so that it is only necessary to use a comparatively few parts which are so connected by stitching that the seams will be in such positions as to cause no discomfort to the wearer.

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention consists of the novel details .of construction and arrangement of parts, described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention it will be understood that such changes may be made'as will fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Figure 1 is aplan view of the glove with all parts assembled.

Fig. 2 is a back view of the glove with all parts assembled.

Fig. 3 is a plan of the cloth blank for the palm, first finger, thumb, and fronts of the.

second, third and fourth fingers.

Figs. 1,5 and 6 are the cloth blanks for the backs of the second, third and fourth fingers respectively, the reduced extensions forming the back of the body of the glove.

Fig. 7 is a plan of the leather covering for the palm, first finger, the fronts of the second, third and fourth fingers and a. portion of the thumb.

Figs. 8, 9 and 10 are the leather blanks for forming the coverings for the backs of the second, third, and fourth fingers respec tively, and

Fig. 11 is the leather blank for the outer face of the leather thumb.

In carrying out my invention, the body of the glove is made'of cloth of any suitable character, and the leather covering is connected thereto by stitching or any other suitable manner.

In Fig. 3 I have shown the cloth blank for making the palm, first finger, thumb and fronts of the second, third and fourth fingers, 1 indicating the palm portion, 2 the thumb piece, 3-3 the portions for the first or finger, and 4, 5 and 6 the fronts of the second, third and fourth fingers, respectively. To form the first finger the outer portion 3' will be folded back on the line 7. The thumb piece 2 will be folded back on the line 8. In Figs, ,4, 5 and 6 I have shown the cloth blanks 9, 10 and 11 for the backs of the second, third and fourth fingers, respectively, the reduced portions 12, 13 and 14: forming the back of the cloth body of the glove as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.

'Figure 7 shows the leather blank for the protecting covering for the palm, first finger, the fronts of the second, third and fourth fingers, and a portion of the thumb. The palm covering is indicated at 15, the covering for the fronts of the second, third and fourth fingers at 16, 17 and 18, respectively, and the covering for the first finger at 19-19, the portion 19 being adapted to be folded back on the line 20. The thumb piece is shown at 21 and is adapted to be folded back on the line 22.- The leather covering for the backs of the second, third and fourth fingers are illustrated at 23, 24: and 25, respectively, in Figs 8, 9- and 10, respectively, and these will be secured to the finger front portions 16, 17 and 18, the portions 23, 2 1 and 25 being of such width that they will form not only the back coverings, but the-side coverings, the seams formed being towards the front of the glove, not between the fingcrs, as more clearly shown at 26 in Fig. 1. The portion 19 of the first finger covering is also of such w1dth that it will form the seam 27 4 towards the front of the finger. The outer leather thumb piece is shown at 28, Fig. 11, and will be secured to the leather thumb portion 21. It W111. noted by referring more particularly to Fig.

13 and 14 of the cloth finger portions Will be stitched together to form the back of the cloth body. These combined finger pieces are then connected to the back of the leather blank illustrated in Fig. 7, covering the finger portions 16, 17 and 18 thereof, the leather portions being face to face. The cloth blank illustrated in Fig. 3 is then placed over thetop of the leather blank illustrated in Fig. 7 and the thumb portions folded on the lines 8 and 22 with the first finger portions folded on the lines 7 and 20. The leather thumb portion 28 is then connected to the thumb portion 21. The parts are all secured by stitching and the glove is then reversed was to bring the parts in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The cloth parts may be connected to the leather parts by stitching around the edges or merely at the ends. While this is the preferable manner of connecting the cloth and leather portions, they may be connected in any other desired manner, the main object of the'invention residing in the protecting covering of leather for the cloth portion.

From the above it will be noted that'I have formed theglove of comparativelyfew parts so connected that the seams will not I be between the fingers to cause discomfort to the wearer. At the same time the palm and the fingers are each. protected by the leather covering, such covering enclosing the fronts,.backs and sides of the fingers and protecting the crotch surfaces. vA glove of I the character described is particularly adapted for Workman, the leather covering prolonging the life of the glove as well as protecting the hand. Having fully described in y invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A glove made of cloth and having a protecting covering for the palm and fingers, said protecting covering comprising a palm having finger portions formed integral therewith and separate finger portions adapted to be secured to the integral finger portions to entirely enclose the fingers of the glove, the seams formed by securing the separate finger portions to the integral finger portions being at thefront of the fingers.

2. A glove made of cloth and having a protecting covering for the palm and fingers, said protecting covering comprising a palm having finger portions integral therewith, one of said finger portions being of greater W'dth than the others whereby it will be folded to enclose the first finger of the glove, the other finger portions covering the fronts of the glove fingers, and separate finger porlions adapted to be secured to the integral finger portions covering the front of the fingers, for enclosing the glove fingers, the seams formed by the folding of that portion forming the first finger and the securing of the separate finger portions to the integral finger portions being at the front of the fingers. i

3. A glove made of cloth and having a protecting covering for the palm and fingers, said protecting covering comprising a palm having finger portions formed integral therewith and separate finger portions adapted to be secured to the integral finger portions to entirely enclose the cloth fingers of the glove, each of said separate finger portions being formed of a single pie'ceof material connected to the integral finger portions in such a manner that there will be no seams at the back portions of the fingers above the lowermost points of the separate finger portions.
