(01. 2-161) This invention relates to improvements in working gloves and more particularly a glove palm constructed out of a plurality of palm, finger, and thur'nb pieces, cut from small stock or scrap material, and secured together in overlapping relation so that the seams proper are covered and protected, and furthermore providing a construction wherein a double thickness of material is provided substantially in the middle portion of the glove palm, and extending entirely across the glove palm to reenforce the glove palm where the same is usually subjected to the severest usage and greatest wear. 7

Heretofore in the construction of mechanics gloves, it has been found that the greatest tendency of tearing is experienced at the seams in the glove palm, where the seam threads usually wear through first, resulting in the opening of the seams. In the present invention it is the intention to provide a reenforced glove palm for a mechanics glove, of inexpensive construction, wherein the inner or palm side of the glove is constructed of a plurality of finger, thumb, and palm pieces cut from small stock or scrap material and so connected to one another that the seams proper are covered by extra overlapping margins of the palm pieces to not only form a reenforced construction at the seams in the glove palm but also affording a construction wherein a double thickness of material is provided to extend entirely across the middle of the glove palm. It is an object of this invention to provide an improved working glove comprising a back and a palm section seamed together, with the seams positioned over the back of the glove away from the palm side, said glove having a palm portion of reenforced construction, adapted to be constructed out of small pieces of material, and having certain of the seams reenforced and protected, while the seams between the thumb back extension and the palm section are moved closer together by the provision of thumb extension pieces on the wrist extension members of the palm section, thereby providing a palm section 45 withall of the seams protected or moved away from the main gripping area of the palm.

It is also an object of this invention to provide a glove with an improved palm formed from a plurality of thumb and finger sections cut from fittings or small pieces of stock, to produce a comparatively inexpensive glove and one in which the palm is reeniorced at the points subjected to the greatest wear, and one in which the seams of the inner palm portion where it connects with the finger and thumb pieces are covered by marginal portions of an exposed palm portion to form a durable glove construction.

A further object of the invention is the construction of a glove palm wherein the palm seams between palm'portions of the finger pieces and between the thumb piece and portions of certain of the finger pieces are covered or reenforced by an outer or main palm piece.

It is an important object of this invention to provide a work glove, designed so that it can be produced at a low cost by the use of small stock or fittings, permitting a reenforced palm portion to be provided of adouble thickness clear across the palm of the glove and wherein marginal portions of an outer palm section are secured or riveted in position to cover and protect stitched seams of the inner palm section where portions of the finger and thumb pieces connect with one another or where marginal portions of the finger pieces and the thumb piece are stitched to an inner palm strip.

Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accompanying drawmgs.

Figure 13 is a fragmentary developed plan view of one corner of a modified form of glove section constructed of a main glove piece and an auxiliary corner piece adjacent one side of the thumb opening.

The improved glove illustrated in Figure 1 comprises a glove back I, of any desired construction, and connected by stitching or other suitable means to an improved palm side. Connected to margins of the back and the palm side of the glove is a cult or wrist section 2 to provlde an improved service glove primarily adapted for use by mechanics or working men.

This invention is more particularly directed to the palm side or unit of a glove. The palm unit, illustrated in Figures 1 to 11 inclusive, may be of inexpensive construction, since it can be constructed from small pieces of leather stock or from trimmings or fittings. The palm unit is constructed out of a plurality of finger and palm sections which when assembled provide a palm unit having a double thickness of material transversely across the main portion of the palm of the glove with the marginal portion of the main palm section secured in position to cover and protect stitched seams of the glove unit.

The palm unit includes in its make-up a first finger or thumb section 3, illustrated in developed form in Figure 8, and cut from leather or other suitable material, having an elongated, tapered, rounded shape, the wide end of which is cut inwardly to provide inwardly inclined edges 1, the outer ends of which connect up with the ends of a curved peripheral edge 5 of the main body of the thumb piece 3. The inner ends of the two inclined edges 4 connect up with a thumb tab or flap 8.

Figure 4 illustrates a developed plan view of a second or index finger palm section I having an integral shank or palm extension piece 8 forming a part thereof. The index finger section is bounded by a curved marginal edge 9, one side of which extends to a tip edge I8 to The inof a straight edge l2 bounding one side of the shank or palm extension piece 8. The opposite side of the curved edge 9, of the index finger piece I, is provided with a dart or notch l3 where it connects up with an inclined edge [4 bounding the opposite side of the shank or palm extension piece 8. The end of the palm extension piece 8 is cut to provide an elongated notch [5 leaving a half dovetailed tab or fiap l6 between the notch l5 and the end of the edge I2.

Figure 5 is a developed plan View of the third or middle finger section of the palm side of the glove. The middle finger section comprises a main body piece ll cut from leather or other suitable material and having a curved peripheral edge I8, the ends of which connect up with short edges I9 which form the ends of oppositely positioned finger crotch pieces or wings 28 and H, which are formed between the ends of the curved edge l8 and two inwardly inclined edges 22. The inner ends of the inwardly inclined edges 22 connect up with the side edges of a middle finger piece shank or palm extension 23, the outer -margin of which is notched at 24 to form a half dovetailed tab or flap 25. The crotch wing or extension 20 of the middle finger piece W is adapted to be seamed up with the crotch extension or wing 26 formed between the inclined edge H and a portion of the edge 9 of the index finger piece 1.

Figure 6 illustrates a developed plan view of the fourth finger piece section of the palm unit. The fourth finger piece section comprises a finger piece 21 having a curved peripheral edge 28, the ends of which connect up with tip edges 29 and 38. The fourth finger piece 21 is provided with an inclined edge 3| to form a tapered crotch extension or wing 32. Connecting up with the tip edge 38 is the outer end of an inwardly inclined edge 33 to form a tapered crotch piece or wing 34 on the opposite side of the fourth finger section 21. The inner ends of the inclined edges 3i and 33 connect up with the inner ends of the side edges of a. fourth finger piece shank or palm extension piece 35 having a slightly inclined outer end edge 36.

Figure 7 illustrates a developed plan View of the fifth or .little finger section which is adapted to be cut out of leather or other suitable material. The little finger section comprises a finger piece 3'! having a curved peripheral edge 38, one end of which connects up with a short edge 39 which forms the end of a tapered crotch piece or wing 48 formed between a portion of the curved outer edge 38 and an inclined edge 41. The inner end of the inclined edge ll connects up with a side edge of a little finger shank or palm extension piece 42, the side edge of which connects up with the curved edge 38 at the notch or dart 53. A straight edge 44 connects the two side edges of the palm piece extension or shank piece 42 of the little finger piece 31.

The palm unit of the glove, of this invention, is adapted to be constructed out of a main palm section cut from leather or other suitable material and comprises a palm piece 45 having a wrist extension piece or section 48, one side margin of which, adjacent the edge5l, serves as a thumb extension piece to locate the seam farther away from the middle of the palm. A combination wrist and thumb extension piece 87 also forms a part of the palm piece 45 to move the thumb seam of the edge 53 closer to the seam along the edge 5|. A curved edge 48 is provided at one side of the main palm section and a slightly angular edge 49 is provided on the opposite side of the palm section. The combination wrist and thumb extension piece 46 is provided with an end edge 58, one end of which terminates at the curved edge 48 while the inner end connects up with an inclined edge 5| at one side of the thumb extension margin of the wrist piece 46. One end of the angular edge 49 connects up with an edge 52 of the combination wrist and thumb extension piece 41 of the palm section. The inner end of the end edge 52 connects up with an inner side edge 53 of the thumb extension margin of the piece 41. A thumb opening 54, of 'a substantially segment shaped design, is provided in the main palm section between the palm pieces 45, 43, and 41. The thumb piece opening 54 is bounded by a curved or arch-shaped edge 55, the ends of which terminate at converging inclined or'radial edges 56 and 51, which connect up with the inner ends of the respective edges and 53. The end of the main palm piece 45 is formed with an edge extending from between the edges 48 and 49.

The end edge of the palm piece 45 is divided by three spaced points that divide the edge into an index finger edge 58, a third or middle finger edge 59, a fourth finger edge 68, and a fifth or little finger edge 6|.

Having described in detail the construction of the various members comprising the main portion of the palm unit of the glove,- the assembly of said palm sections will now be described. The edge 22 of the crotch wing 28 of the middlefinger piece I1 is adapted to be stitched to the edge ll of the crotch extension 26 to form a crotch seam 62 (Figure 3) and the side edge 52 of the palm extension piece 8 and one side edge of the palm extension piece 23 are adapted to be stitched together to provide a palm seam 63. The inclined edge 22 of the crotch wing 2| and the edge 3| of the crotch wing 22 are adapted to be stitched together to provide a crotch seam 64 between the third and fourth finger pieces. The adjacent side edges of the palm piece extensions 23-and 35 are also adapted to be seamed together to form a palm seam 65. The crotch edges 33 and 4! of the crotch wings 34 and 40 are also stitched together to form a crotch seam 66 between the fourth and little finger pieces. The adjacent side edges of the palm piece extensions 35 and 42 are adapted to be stitched together to provide a palm seam 61.

The palm extension pieces 8, 23, 35, and 42 having been stitched together form an inner palm piece for the glove.

To connect the thumb piece 3 with the inner palm portion of the palm unit of the glove, the fiap 6 of the thumb piece is stitched to the tabs I5 and 25 of the palm extension pieces 8 and 23 to provide a thumb seam 68.

With the thumb and finger pieces stitched together as illustrated in Figure 3, the main palm piece 45 is adapted to be secured to the finger pieces and the thumb piece. This is done, as illustrated in Figure 2, by laying the palm piece or section 45 over the inner palm section, consisting of the finger piece extensions 8, 23, 35, and 42, thereby covering up the seams 63, 65, and 51 of the inner palm section. The end edges 53, 59, 60, and GI of the palm piece 45 are now stapled or riveted across the respective finger pieces 1, I1, 21, and 31 respectively to form an armored or stapled seam 69. The ends of the finger piece palm extensions 8, 23, 35, and 42 are now secured to the main or outer palm piece 45 by transverse stitching 1B. The curved margin 55 of the palm piece 45 is positioned to overlap the thumb seam 88 and is rigidly secured to the thumb piece 3 by means of metal staples or other suitable fastening means to provide an armored seam II, which seam 'H continues at one end to secure the marginal edge 56 of the palm piece to one of the marginal edges 4 of the thumb piece 3. The opposite end of the armored seam H continues on to secure the marginal edge. 51 of the-palm piece extension 41 to the other marginal edge 4 of the thumb piece 3.

To complete the palm unit, the thumb is provided with a thumb back piece 12 constructedof cloth or other suitable material and having a leather thumb tip 13 stitched across the outer end thereof. The major portion of the marginal edge of the thumb back piece 12 is stitched to the marginal edge 5 of the thumb palm piece 3. The stitching continues on, to secure opposite sides of the comparatively narrow end portion of the thumb back piece '12 to the two marginal edges 51 and 53 of the'palm extension pieces 46 and 41 respectively, thereby providing a construction wherein the thumb extension seams are positioned closely together with the seam 5| moved farther away from the field of'wear of the palm, a distance substantially equal to the length of the edge 56 (Figure 9). The end of the thumb back piece 12 is stitched to the glove cuff 2, as clearly illustrated in Figure 1.

The completed glove is thus provided with an margins of the glove back on the back of the a glove. The improved palm unit is also construct ed so that the vital seamsbetween the palm extension pieces of the finger pieces, as well as the seam between the thumb piece and two of the thumb extension pieces, are completely covered 7 by margins of the main palm piece 45, which covering margins are secured in place by means of armored outer seams formed by the use of metal staples, rivets, or the like. A reenforced glove palm unit is thus provided in which the main stitchings of the palm portions are covered, while the exposed seams of the palm unit are located at remote or out of the way positions, to obviate wear or openingat said seams.

The back of the glove may be of any selected construction. and, of course, is adapted to be secured to the palm unit and to the cuff or wrist piece to provide a finished glove. If desired, a lining may be provided in the glove to cover the inner surfaces of the palm unit.

In the construction of the palm unit, attention is particularly called to the construction of the crotch wings, the shape of which provides finger crotches which incline downwardly from the palm'of the glove between the fingers to be secured to the back of the glove at points nearer to the cuff than the palm ends of the crotches. This arrangement provides inclined crotches between the fingers producing a much better fitting glove to compensate for the shape of the human hand,in which the outer end of the palm is farther from the wrist than the outer end of the back of a hand.

Figure 12 is an inside plan view of a developed modified form of a glove palm unit. The modified form of glove palm unit is adapted to be constructed out of smaller pieces of leather or other material for the reason that finger pieces without the palm extension shanks are used in combination with the palm section and the thumb piece 3. The parts of the modified form of the palm unit which are identical with the parts illustrated in Figure 3 will be designated by the same reference numerals.

In the modified form of the construction, an

inner palm piece or pad section 14 is provided constructed out of cloth or other suitable material, and extending clear across the palm of the glove. Integrally formed on the margin of the inner palm piece 14, nearest the wrist band, is a dovetailed tab or flap 15 to which the thumb tab 6 is secured by a stitched means 16. The palm sides of the fingers are formed of leather or other suitable material and comprise a second or index finger piece 77, a third or middle finger piece '18, a fourth finger piece 79, and a fifth or little finger piece 80. The various finger pieces are provided with tapered crotch wings 8| which are stitched together to form inclined crotch seams 82.

The inner ends of the finger pieces 11 to inclusive are secured across the outer margin of the inner palm piece 14 by a stitched seam 83. The stitched seam 83 is covered on the exterior by the main palm piece 45, the marginal edges 58 to 6! inclusive of which extend beyond the seam 83 and are secured to the respective finger pieces i? to 80 inclusive by means of metal staples, rivets, or the like to provide an armored seam 84. The thumb seam 15 is covered on the exterior by a marginal edge 55 of the palm piece 45 to provide a construction similar to that illustrated in Figure 11. The marginal edge of the inner palm piece 74, nearest the wrist end of the glove palm, is secured to the outer palm piece 45 by a stitched seam 85. In case an inner lining is desired for the palm unit of the modified form of glove illustrated in Figure 12, a selected lining properly shaped maybe secured to the inner face of the palm unit before the palm unit is secured to the back of the glove.

Figures 13 and 14 illustrate a modified form of a palm section for a mechanics glove. The modified form of palm section shown in Figure 13 is similar to the palm section illustrated in Figure 9, with the exception that the integral thumb extension 47 is omitted and is replaced by an auxiliary palm extension thumb piece 85 having an extension fiap or tab 81 integrally formed at one end thereof and secured to a margin of the modified palm section 45a by a stitched seam 88. The general shape of the thumb extension piece 86 is similar to the piece 41 and permits the palm portion of the modified form of glove to be constructed out of two pieces of leather instead of one large piece.

It will, of course, be understood that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention and it is therefore not the purpose to limit the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the scope of the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a glove the combination with a back, of a wrist portion connected therewith, and a glove palm unit connected with said back and said Wrist portion, said glove palm unit being constructed of a plurality of thumb, finger, and palm pieces, with the thumb and finger pieces having margins stitched to one of the palm pieces to provide inner seams, which are covered on the exterior by marginal portions of another of the palm pieces, said last mentioned palm piece having armored seams along the margins thereof overlapping the thumb and finger pieces.

2. In a glove the combination with a back, of a wrist portion connected therewith, and a glove palm unit connected with said back and said wrist portion, said glove palm unit comprising a plurality of finger pieces and a thumb piece, connected by inner seams to an inner palm piece, and an outer palm piece covering the inner palm piece, the thumb piece, and said finger pieces and having armored outer seams to cover up the inner connecting seams between the thumb piece and the inner palm piece and the inner seams between the inner palm piece and said finger pieces.

3. In a glove, the combination with a back, of a cuff portion connected therewith, and a glove palm unit connected with said back and said cuff portion, said glove palm unit comprising a thumb piece, a plurality of finger pieces, an inner palm piece extending entirely across the palm portion of the glove and having inner seams therein, an inner seam between the inner palm piece and the thumb piece, an outer palm piece covering the inner palm piece and also covering the seams therein to protect the same, said outer palm piece having marginal portions thereof overlapping the thumb piece to cover the seam between the thumb piece and said inner palm piece, and metal staples securing the overlapping marginal portions of the outer palm piece to the thumb piece to form an outer thumb seam for the protection of the inner thumb seam.

In a glove, the combination with a back, of a cuff portion connected therewith, and a glove palm unit connected with said back and said cuff portion, said glove palm unit comprising superimposed inner and outer palm pieces, a thumb piece, a plurality of finger pieces, inner seams between the inner palm piece and said thumb piece and finger pieces, said inner seams being covered by the outer palm piece to protect the inner seams, staples connecting marginal portions of the outer palm piece to the thumb piece and to said finger pieces, and tapered crotch wings integrally formed on the finger pieces, with the crotch wings of adjacent finger pieces stitched together to form inclined crotches between the fingers and between the glove palm unit and the glove back.

5. In a glove, the combination with a back, of a wrist portion connected therewith, and a glove palm unit connected with said back and said wrist portion, said glove palm unit comprising a double thickness palm section, a palm side thumb piece, a plurality of finger pieces, inner seams between the inner thickness of the palm section and the thumb piece and finger pieces, said inner seams being covered and protected by the outer thickness of the palm section, stapled exposed seams between the outer thickness of the palm section and said thumb piece and finger pieces, a thumb back secured to the palm side thumb piece and to said palm piece and wrist portion, and tapered crotch wings formed on the finger pieces and forming inclined crotches between the finger pieces connecting the glove palm with the glove back.

6. A glove comprising a back including a thumb back piece, a wrist portion connected therewith, an outer palm section connected with the back and with said wrist portion, finger pieces, palm extension pieces formed on the finger pieces and seamed together to form an inner palm section, a palm side thumb piece secured to the thumb back piece and seamed to the inner palm section, said outer palm section covering the seams of the inner palm section to protect said seams, exposed armored seams between marginal portions of the outer palm section where the outer palm section overlaps the palm side thumb piece and said finger pieces, and tapered crotch wings formed on the finger pieces and secured together to form inclined crotches between the finger pieces and connecting the palm sections with the glove back.

7. A glove, including in combination, a glove palm unit comprising a plurality of finger pieces, palm extension pieces integrally formed on the finger pieces and seamed together to form an inner palm piece extending across the entire width of the glove, a thumb piece seamed to the inner palm piece, an outer palm piece covering the inner palm piece and stapled thereto to cover and protect the seams in the inner palm piece, and tapered crotch wings integrally formed on the finger pieces with the crotch wings of adjacent finger pieces stitched together to form inclined finger crotches.

8. In a glove including in combination, a glove palm comprising a plurality of finger pieces, palm extension pieces integrally formed on the finger pieces and stitched together to form an inner palm piece, inclined crotches connecting the finger pieces, a thumb piece having a tab integrally formed thereon and seamed to the inner palm piece, an outer palm piece covering the inner palmpiece and the seams between the palm extension pieces and the seam between the thumb piece and the inner palm piece, said outer palm piece having a thumb opening therein, metal means for securing the inner marginal end of the thumb piece to the margin of the thumb opening in the outer palm piece, and metal means for securing marginal portions of the outer palm piece to said finger pieces.

9. In a glove, including in combination, a palm unit comprising an inner palm piece having finger pieces projecting therefrom, a thumb piece having a marginal portion thereof seamed to the inner palm piece, an outer palm piece covering the inner palm piece and the seam between the thumb piece and said inner palm piece, said outer palm piece having a thumb opening therein, the margin of which overlaps the thumb piece, and metal securing means fastening the margin of the thumb opening to the thumb piece to completely cover and protect the seam between the thumb piece and the inner palm piece.

10. A glove, including in combination, a plurality of finger .pieces each having tapered crotch pieces and palm extension pieces integrally formed thereon, said tapered crotch pieces and palm extension pieces of adjacent finger pieces seamed together to form inclined crotches between the finger pieces, and forming a palm section out of the palm extension pieces.

'11. A glove, including in combination, a glove palm unit comprising a plurality of finger pieces, palm extension pieces integrally formed thereon and secured together toform an inner palm section, tapered crotch members integrally formed on the finger pieces and having crotch members of adjacent finger pieces stitched together to form inclined crotches between the finger pieces, a thumb piece seamed to the inner palm section, an outer palm section stapled to the finger pieces and to the thumb piece to completely cover and protect the seams in the inner palm section.

12. A glove, including in combination, a glove palm unit comprising a plurality of finger pieces, palm extension pieces integrally formed thereon and secured together to form an inner palm sec tion, tapered crotch members integrally formed on the finger pieces and having crotch members of adjacent finger pieces stitched together to form inclined crotches between the finger pieces, a thumb piece seamed to the inner palm section, an outer palm section stapled to the finger pieces and to the thumb piece to completely cover and protect the seams in the inner palm section, said outer palm section having wrist pieces thereon stapled to the thumb piece.

13. A glove, including, in combination, a glove palm unit comprising a plurality of finger pieces, palm extension pieces integrally formed thereon and secured together to form an inner palm sec tion, crotch members integrally formed on the finger pieces and having crotch members of adjacent finger pieces stitched together to form inclined crotches between the finger pieces, a thumb piece seamed to the inner palm section, an outer palm section stapled to the finger pieces and to the thumb piece to completely cover and protect the seams in the inner palm section, said outer palm section having wrist pieces thereon stapled to the thumb piece, and a thumb back secured to'the thumb piece and to the wrist extension pieces of the outer palm section.
