Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 26, 1921.
Application filed May 7, 1920. Serial No. 379,432.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, HERMAN A. GILLIAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to hand coverings.
This invention has utility when incorporated in faced or armored gloves for the production of a comfortable, wear-resisting workmans glove at a minimum of expense as to parts, material, operations and seamings.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a back view of a glove in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the glove of- Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line Hie-TH, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an elevation of the one-piece de veloped lining or body blank;
Fig. 5 is an elevation of the onepiece developed facing or palm wear-resisting blank;
Fig. 6 is the thumb back facin blank;
Fig. 7 is the little finger fourc iette;
Fig. 8 is the third and fourth finger fourchette; and
Fig. 9 is the fourchet-te as used between the first and second and between the second and third fingers.
The blank for the body or lining is shown as one-piece and in low-price workmens gloves may be of canton flannel as a thread This blank comprises a palm 1, opposed by a hand back portion 2 with a thumb inside portion 8 therebetween. Arising from the opposite edge of the body portion from that carrying the thumb inside or major digit portion 3 is a continuous series of digits, comprising a little finger front at, third finger front 5, second finger front 6, index finger front 7 united with index finger back 8, second finger back 9, third finger back 10 and little finger back 11. The blank second in size comprises a palm 12, with a drop thumb 13 corresponding to the thumb 3 of the body or lining blank. Oppositely from the thumb portion 13, this facing has rising from the palm 12. little finger portion 14:. third fin er portion 15, second finger portion 16. in "ex finger front portion 17 with a half backward extension 18 integral therewith. Five minor blanks are provided, which, like the facing 12-18,
may be of wear-resisting material, as leather. These five blanks include a thumb back 19, an outside fourchette 20 for the little finger, a fourchette 21 between the little and third fingers, and two fourchettes 22 one for each s de of the second finger. the hand portron as thus completed, there may be added a gauntlet 23. In the assembly of this glove. the fourchettes and inner thumb portion are sewed to the lining at the flat seams, and then the facing is assembled with the insidefront lining to the palm facing and finger fronts and simultaneously connecting the front edges of the fourchettes thereto in this three-part oining. As the seam is com. pleted, the glove is turned to throw the seam inside.
The lining of body is incomplete, but is of an extent to protect the un-faced portions and to provide double thickness at all greatest wear portions. This lining 1l1, is at no point seamed to itself, except on the outside wristward from the little finger, Where seam 24 unites directly portions 12, 1, 2. This seam 24: is a folded seam as are all the three ply seams from the palm side of the glove, as well also as seam 25 down the back of the thumb. he seam 24 is a continuation from the tip of the little finger, like the seam 25 is a continuation of the seam upward about the tip of the thumb from the front. The rearward two play seams between the facing means and the back body are all fiat seams 26.
lit is to be noted there are no seams up the back of the hand to become strained or ripped, and the back is smooth, finished in appearance. retaining the full strength of the body. The single front seam, in following the base of the thumb mount is in a most unobjectionable location. The angular contour of lining tip digits 8, 9, 10, 11, reduces the stock for finger tip seaming, so there is a minimum of clumsiness at the ends of the fingers. The front seaming of the fourchettes to the wear palm, while heavy, is disposed off the main wear portions of the glove so that use will not shorten the life of the glove by prematurely opening such seams. The fourchettes are in such proximity to the main wear portions as to take inter-digit wear in prolonging glove life beyond that which the main body might provide. Furthermore, nate inter-digit seaming, thus allowing a maximum of freedom 1n finger movements with a minimum of glove resistance or wear. The fourchettes and thumb back are the unlined facing portions of the glove incomplete as to the main body lining or unit.
The configuration and assembly as herein disclosed has inherent therein features of considerable manufacturing value. For in stance in material alone, 100 doz. pairs of this glove may be made from 190 yds. of stock, while a glove of similar size with back seaming requires 280 yds. For co-extensive facing, there is herein fewer numbe of parts, the operations in assembling are more simple, the seams are not so numerous nor so extensive herein. With leather facing sewed intoeach exposed seam as a fray-resisting material the glove assembly is permanent for the maximum life of the wear leather facing. This feature in reality contributes one-third to the life of the glove,
the fourchettes elimifabric body providing What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is: v i
A glove including an integral thread finger fronts and backs, said body, serving as a lining for the glove fr0nt,.a one-piece fray resisting facing fo the fingers and palm over said lining, fray resisting fourchettes, means providing a folded seam at the fourchettes uniting the finge front glove body as a lining to the facing, and means providing a flat seam connection between the fourchettes and the back body portion, said fourchettes extending to render the glove seamless between the fingers with but a single thickness of material between the fingers, the body portion extending to render the glove internally seamless from the fingers, to the wrist, except as to a seam from the little finger to the wrist, all'seams of said glove about the fingers and palm including said fray resisting material in combination with the thread fabric of the glove body.
ln witness whereof I affix my signature.
