GLOVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1908.
Application filed January 25, 1908. Serial No. 412,613.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BERNARD, citizen of the United States, residing at J ohnstown, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described reference being had to the accompanying drawings which illustrate the best form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention and the said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a glove, especially adapted for driving or automobiling, which is so constructed that it can be used in a manner similar to a gauntlet glove, to cover a coat sleeve or the like, or which can be used as an arm fitting glove, at the option of the wearer.
To this end my invention consists in providing a glove having an elongated wrist or arm portion with an expansion piece, inserted between the meeting edges of the wrist opening, and so formed that the arm portion may be expanded to form a gauntlet or may be closely held together to make a tight fitting arm portion to or above the elbow as de sired, all as more fully hereinafter explained, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a glove embodying my invention showing the same open. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the expansion piece. Fig. 8 is a sectional view of the arm portion of the glove showing the same closed or fastened together. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the glove showing it as it appears when used as a gauntlet glove, and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing it used as an arm fitting glove. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, but drawn to a reduced scale, showing a slightly modified form of my invention.
In carrying out my invention I form the hand portion A of the glove in the usual manner and provide it with a long wrist and arm portions B, B of a size to fit the wrist and arm of the wearer and which are slit from a point adjacent to the palm portion to the outer edge of the arm portion B, providing meeting edges 12 5, adjacent to the wrist portion proper of the glove, and meeting edges 7) 6 adjacent to what I term the arm portion. At the point where the wrist portion of the glove may be said to merge into the arm portion the opposed edges are provided with opposite recesses t b which are preferably semi-circular or curved as shown. It is obvious, however, that these recesses may be given other shapes or configurations, and the same results secured, the particular shape of these recesses not being material.
0 represents an expansion piece which. is preferably formed substantially as shown in Fig. 2, gradually increasing in width from a point e, to a straight end portion 0, and having its opposite edges provided with recesses c c to register with the recesses t 6 This expansion piece is stitched or otherwise secured at its edges to the edges 1) t, the edges of the recesses b" 0 being also stitched or secured together, as shown in the drawing, leaving the expansion piece within the wrist and arm portions of the glove, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The meeting edges 7) l) of the wrist portion of the glove are provided with separable securing devices of any preferred type, such as button and button hole, snaps, buckles, hook and lace or other of the usual fastening devices. I prefer, however, to provide said edges with. hooks as indicated at (l and to provide a lace or cord D having one end socured to the glove and the other end adapted to be secured by a friction or other fastening device indicated at d, but I do not limit myself to this style of securing means. The wrist securing devices extend substantially preferably to the recessed portions 5 b as shown. I may extend the said securing de vices along the meeting edges 1) b if de sired but I prefer to provide the edges 7) b with separate securing means, consisting in this instance of straps E provided at each end with the female members of the usual snap or separate button fasteners as indicated at e e, the male members thereof being secured to the edges Z) Z) as shown at e e. Other forms of securing devices, may how ever be employed.
When the glove is to be worn as a gauntlet as indicated in Fig. 4, the straps or other securing means E are not used (and may be left attached to the glove as shown, or removed as preferred). The wrist portion of the glove is secured tightly around the wrist of the wearer by means of the wrist securing devices, in this instance the cord and hooks, thus insuring a perfect fit of the glove and preventing it from working upward over the hand, and the arm portion is allowed to expand over the cuff or sleeve of a coat or garment as may be desired. The recesses b facilitate the expansion of the arm portion of the glove, as shown in Fig. 4, so that it forms what is to all intents and purposes a gauntlet, as will be readily seen.
When the glove is to be worn as an arm fitting glove, the egdes b b will also be brought together so as to cause the arm portion B to fit the arm tightly and said edges will be secured together by the straps E and snaps e c, or other securing means as shown in Fig. 5. In this case the expansion piece will lie folded throughout its length within the wrist and arm portions of the glove.
it is obvious that the wrist and arm portions of the glove may be formed integrally with the hand portion or separately and sewed thereto, and that the arm portion or both arm and wrist portion may be lined or unlined as is found. desirable. In the present instance they areshown. unlined. for greater clearness of illustration.
The opposite recesses o b in the opposed edges of the wrist portion, and the recesses c c in the expansion piece, may be omitted if desired and. the said edges of the wrist and arm portions and the expansion piece may be cut straight, when a widely expanding gauntlet is not desired, or when it is desired to have the same kind of fastener extend the entire length of wrist portion and gauntletcombined. Such a construction is illus tratcd. in Fig. 6 in which. the meeting edges of the wrist and arm gauntlet portion are shown straight and provided each with a continuous row of lacing hooks d to receive the lacing cord D and in such case I prefer to provide a friction or other fastening de vice, as indicated at d adjacent to the lower part of the wrist portion and a'second fastening device as indicated at (1 adjacent to the lower part of the gauntlet or arm portion, as shown in Fig. 6;
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a combincd gauntlet and arm fitting glove, comprising a hand portion, a slit wrist portion, and a slit arm portion, the wrist and arm por tions being of a size to fit the wrist and arm, the meeting edges of the wrist portion being in alinement with the meeting edges of the arm portion, an expansion piece inserted between and secured. to themeeting edges of the wrist portion and arm portion, and being of sufficient width where it joins the arm portion to form therewith a gauntlet, and capable of being folded within the arm and wrist portions when the glove is used as an arm fitting glove, and separable securing devices for the meeting edges of the wrist portion, substantially as described.
2-. As a new article of manufacture, a combined gauntlet and arm fitting glove, comprising a hand portion, a slit wrist portion, and a slit arm portion, the wrist and arm portions being of a size to fit the wrist and arm, the meeting edges of the wrist portion being in alinement with the meeting edges of the arm portion, an expansion piece inserted between and secured to the meeting edges of the wrist portion and arm portion, and being of sufficient width where it joins the arm portion to form therewith a gauntlet, and capable of being folded within the arm and wrist portions when the glove is used as an arm fitting glove, separable securing devices for the meeting edges of the wrist portion and separable securing devices for the meeting edges of the arm portion, substantially as d escribed.
3. A glove comprising a hand portion, a wrist portion and an arm portion, the wrist and arm portions being slit to form meeting edges, said. edges being recessed, substantially at the junction of the wrist and arm portions to facilitate the expansion of the arm portion to form a gauntlet, an expansion piece secured to the meeting edges of the wrist and arm portions and having recessed portions registering with those of said edges, and securing devices for uniting the edges of the wrist portion, substantially as described.
4. A glove comprising a hand portion, a wrist portion and an arm portion, the wrist and arm portions being slit to form meeting edges, said edges being recessed, substantially at the junction of the wrist and arm portions to facilitate the expansion of the arm portion to form a gauntlet, an expansion piece secured to the meeting edges of the wrist and arm portions and having recessed portions registering with those of said edges, securing devices for uniting the meeting edges of the wrist portion, and independently operable securing devices for uniting the meeting edges of the arm portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES BERNARD.
