Description

Dec. 18, 1951 R. F. JOHNSON COMBINATION NECKTIE AND POCKET HANDKERCHIEF Filed Feb. 13, 1951 INVENTOR. Roem F. Jcnmsou maf/2v madam ATTOQMEYS Patented Dec. 18, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION N ECKTIE AND POCKET HANDKERCHIEF Robert F. Johnson, Bedford, Va.
Application February 13, 1951, Serial No. 210,647
l This invention relates to wearing apparel, and more particularly to-a combination necktie and matching pocket handkerchief.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved article of wearing apparel which may be used as a necktie and which is arranged to provide a matching pocket handkerchief Which the wearer may detach from the necktie and insert into his breast pocket to simulate a pocket handkerchief lmatching the necktie.
`A further object4 of the invention is to provide an improved article of Wearing apparel which provides the effect of Ya matching pocket handkerchief and Anecktie, said article being simple in construction, being inexpensive to manufacture, being easy to manipulate, and being attractive in appearance.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved novelty necktie which may be employedto provide a matching simulated pocket handkerchieirthe pocket handkerchief element being detachably secured to the necktie and being easy to disengage therefrom when required for use to simulate vthe pocket handkerchief matching the necktie.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claims, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating one form of improved combination. necktie and simulated pocket handkerchief constructed in aocordance with the present invention, the pocket handkerchief element being shown attached to the end of the neckband of the necktie element;
Figure 2 is a perspective View showing the manner of securement of the pocket handkerchief element to the end of the neckband of the necktie in another form of the present invention;
Figure 3 is a view showing the manner in which the necktie of Figure 1 or 2 may be worn along with the use of the pocket handkerchief element which matches the necktie element;
Figure 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Figure 3, showing the manner of attachment of the pocket handkerchief element in the vest pocket of the wearer;
Figure 5 is a front elevational View of the end of the neckband and the pocket handkerchief element attached thereto in still another form of the present invention;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view of the structure of Figure 5, showing the separable edges of the neckband spread apart to reveal the interengag- 3 Claims. (Cl. 2-145) ing fastening elements of the neckband and the pocket handkerchief element;
Figure 7 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken on line I-'I of Figure 5.
Referring tothe drawings, and more particularly to Figure l, the combination necktie and pocket handkerchief elements may comprise a main body II having the front necktie drape portion I2 and the neckband portion I3, said neckband portion being sewn to define a flat sleeve having the inside seam I4. The end portions of the neckband, shown at I5, may be slit at their sides to define separable flaps, suitable reinforcement stitches I5 being provided. Designated at Il is an end piece which is generally pentagonal in shape, as shown in Figure 1, and which is stitched around a stifening frame I8, whereby the piece I'I will maintain its shape. The top end y of the member I'I is designated at I9 and is receivable between the end flaps I5 of neckband I3. The top end I9 is provided with female snap fastener elements 20, and one of the aps I5 is provided with male snap fastener elements 2I which are lockingly engageable in the female elements 2t to secure the end piece to the neckband in the manner shown in Figure 1. When it is desired to use the end piece I1 to simulate a pocket handkerchief, said end piece is detached by disengaging the snap fastener elements 20 and 2l and the end piece is inverted and inserted into the breast pocket of the user, as shown in Figure 3, whereby the tapered ends of the piece II will project above the edge of the pocket and will have the appearance of a pocket handkerchief which matches the tie drape portion I2. As shown in Figure 4, the inside lining of the pocket, designated at 22, may be provided with male snap fastener elements 23 lockingly engageable with the female snap fastener elements 20 of the end piece, Il to releasably secure said end piece in the wearers breast pocket.
The stiffening .frame I8 may be of any suitable material, such as stiff wire around which the fabric of the end piece I'I may be sewn in any suitable manner.
In the form of the invention shown in Figure 2, the tie is shown with the neckband seam I-II of Figure 1 absent, as where the seam occurs at the side edges of the necktie rather than at the inner sur-face thereof, the other special details being identical with those described in connection with Figures 1 and 3.
Referring now to Figures 5, 6 and 7, in a modi- 1vfied form of the invention, the neckband shown at I3' may be provided at its free end portion with a slide fastener element 24, whereby the end portion of the neckband may be opened by elevating the slidable locking member 25 of the slide fastener element. Figure 6 shows the slide fastener element 25 in elevated position, whereby the edges of the neckband segments may be separated to expose the interior of the neckband. Secured to the inside surface of the neckband is a plate member of suitable rigid material, shown at 26, said plate member being provided with spaced brackets 21, 2' having headed projections 28, 28, as shown in Figures 6 and 7. The top end of the pocket handkerchief piece, shown at l1', has secured thereto the respective eye members 29, 29 adapted to lockingly engage over the headed projections 28, 28. The eye members 29 have apertures which are of keyhole shape, the shanks of the headed projections 28, 28 being received in the narrow portions of the apertures of eye members 29, 29 in the manner shown in Figure 6. Secured on the top portion of the member Il is a plate element 3D provided with a male snap fastener member 3-I which is located midway between and below the eye members 29, 29. As shown in Figure 7, the slidable locking member 25 has pivotally connected thereto a tab element 32 having an inwardly offset, fingergripping portion 33. The finger-gripping portion 33 is formed with a plurality of slots 34, as shown in Figures and 6, which are arranged to define a central aperture having exible side marginal elements 35, 35. The slots-34 are therefore arranged to define a female snap fastener element which is lockingly engageable with the male snap fastener element 3l when the slide fastener element 24 is closed and the finger-gripping portion 33 is brought down ovei` the male snap fastener element 3l in the manner shown in Figures 5 and 7. It will therefore be readily apparent that the end piece Il may be normally secured to the end of the neckband i3 and the connection of the end piece l1 to the neckband may be normally concealed by the closure of the slide fastener element 24` and the locking engagement of the hand-gripping member 33 with the male snap fastener element 3|. When it is desired to employ the end piece I1 to simulate a pocket handkerchief, it is merely necessary to unfasten the hand-gripping member 33 from the male snap fastener element 3l and elevate the slidable locking member to open up the slide fastener. The top end of the member I1 is then detached from the headed pin elements 28, 28, whereby the piece H may be inverted and inserted in the wearers breast pocket.
While certain specific embodiments of an improved combination necktie and pocket handkerchief have been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modi- 4 cations within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claims.
