To all 'whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, RALPH P. EDWARDS,

a citizen of the United States, residing at'v Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented Certain new and useful lmprovements in Jump used for children, and generally termed jumpers. l

It is an object of the invention to provlde such a garment with an opening Hap upon one side, the waist'portions above the same being extended below the upper edge of the open flap, and being` secured opposite the side slits or plackets formed by said flap.

It is also an object .of the invention to provide jumpers having waist portions and trousers portions formed together, `wlth an opening flap upon one side, the waist portions being extended well below the upper edge of said opening and secured below the side slits or plackets, gussets being also provided at said slits or plackets for strengthening the garment and also for cooperating with the extended Waist portions to prevent exposure of the person of the wearer due to any gaping at the slits or plackets.

lt is a still further object of the invention to provide jumpers having an 'open flap upon the front or back, and formed with a band secured to the upper `edge thereof, the said band being extended at its ends beyond the flap suiiiciently to fold around the front of the jumpers so as to be buttoned vatthe front.

In order to permit the flap 3 Vtoy open properly, side slits at 11 are formed and strengthening gussets 12 are stitched to the adjacent parts-for preventing the garment from being torn and for a further coperation with the back waist portions in preventing exposure of the person of the wearer l as Will be hereinafter described. i rllhe gusset 12 upon each side of the jumpers is preferably made of rather large size, so as to extend from the upper, outer corner of the flap 3 to a point adjacent to either the but-` ton 5 or 7, according to which side of the l garment it is applied. @ne edge of the gusset 12 is usually stitched into the side seam of the garment at 13, while the other edge is generally stitched at 14` along the side edges of the ap 3, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. An important feature of the invention isv the extension of the lower rear portions of the waist 1. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the back of the Waist portions is extended at each side and curved downwardly as shown at 15, the lower outer portions of said backs being carried to a point a little below the side slit or placket 14 so that stitching at 16 may be made to secure and anchor the same as shown in Fig. 1. since the gussets when in folded form extend so as to lap well upwardlyupon the back extensions of the waist. Thus the person of the wearer is fully protected against exposure, no matter if the slits or plackets at the sides spread or gap.

The band at the upper edge ofthe rear flap is commonly secured `in place by the buttons 4, 5, and 7, and as an additional holding means, the extended band portions 8 and 9 are buttoned at the front. Thus if any of the buttons 4, 5 or 7 -become lost or broken, the flap will still be held in place.

It will bey evident that the structure of the garment may be modiied without departing from the spirit of the invention, so

- long as the waist portions are carried well below the edges of the opening flap, and so longas the strengthening gusset 1s made 'to fold with its upper edge above the lower edges of the waist extensions.

It will be observed that the gusset performs a double function, namely, thatv of preventing the tearing of the garment at the slits or plackets and also of coperating with the extended portions of the waist to prevent exposure ofthe person of the wearer.

What is claimed is:

1. A jumper garment having waist and drawers portions formed with an'opening at the back, a flap for closing the same and forming plackets at the sides, and strengthening gussets mounted in the said plackets and having two edges about the length of the side edge of the flap, one of the said edges being sewed to the side edge of the flap, while the other edge is sewed to the side seam of the waist portion, whereby the said gussets close the openings at the sides of the flaps and between the same and the garment.

2. A garment of the class described having waist and drawers portions and an opening between them at the back, a flap for co'vering said opening, a belt secured to the upper edgeI of said flap and|having its free ends adapted to meet and button at the front, folding pieces of approximately triangular shape forming gussets between the flap and garment, the vertical edges of the gussetsI ywhen folded being stitched, one along the.- entire side edge of the flap the other opposite thereto along the side seam of the garment while the/ folded `portion .extends Vinwardly between the waist portions of the garment and flap, whereby the placket between the side edges of the lap and the garment are completely closed, the gussets being of suicient length to permit of the flap opening its full length.
