Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
DWIGHT M. CHURCH, OF DERBY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEO. It. BAILEY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LADIES SKIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,336, dated September 35, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, DWIGHT M. CHURCH, of Derby, New Haven county, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ladies7 Skirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved ladys skirt. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View ofthe same, taken through the line x 5v, Fig. 1. I
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention has t'or its object to furnish a ladys skirt thev lower part ot' which may be detached when soiled and replaced by a clean part without its being necessary to wash the entire skirt every time its lower part becomes soiled; and it consists et' a ladys skirt formed by'conibining a detachable` lower part with the body or mainl part of the skirt, as here inafter more fully described.
The upper part or body, A, of the skirt is made with a waistband, B, in the ordinary manner. Upon the lower edge ot' the part A is formed a wide hem; This hem is tucked by folding in its lower edge, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the hem may have two downwardlyprojectin g edges or flaps, a and a2. The turned-u p part of the hem is secured in place by being sewed fast to the inner flap, a2." These aps a and a2 should be of about the same length, or the outerone may be a little longer than the inner one. To the inner tlap, a2, as shown in Figs. l and 2, are sewed buttons sufficiently near each other to fully and securely support the lower detachable part, C, so that its upper edge may not sag below the lower edge ofthe tlapa.
The lower edge of the detachable part C lmay terminate in a hem or in an embroidered portion, in the. same manner that the lower edges of ladies skirts are ordinarily finished.
In the upper edge of the detachable part C are formed button-holes corresponding in number and position to the number and position ot the buttons on the ap a2, before described 5 and tlie part G is secured to the part A by being buttoned to it, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
When the lower part of a skirt constructed in this manner becomes soiled it may be removed and replaced by a clean one without its being necessary to remove or wash the entire skirt. Lower parts, C,ot`di1terent qualities, may also be attached to ,the same body A, as circumstances may render them suitable.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved ladys skirt formed by combining a detachable lower part, C, with the body or main part A ot' the skirt by fastenings concealed by a tuck, a', substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
