This invention relates to coats and like wearing apparel of the type having a single front opening, and it has for its object a construction which provides for the girthcommonly known as the widthof the skirt of the garment being increased so that while being of normal size in general use, say for walking purposes, it can be increased when used for cycling, motoring, etc., when it is desired to more fully protect and cover the knees.

According to the present invention a garment of the extending skirt type with a divided overlapping front has one edge of the divided front formed adjacent its lower edge with anarrow plait, which latter extends upwards for a short distance and is secured to the inner "surface of the garment by a horizontal line of stitching at a point adjacent the lowermost coat fastening, a short narrow strip attached adjacent the lower edge of the opposite divided front and means for interengaging the said strip with the plait, and se curing the plait and the strip to the edges of the garment carrying them when the same are not in use. r

The plait may in some cases with advantage be made partly out of the underfacing of the garment and may be doubled instead of the single type. Any suitable means may be employed for securing the plait and strip to the garment when same are not in use, such means including buttons and buttonholes, hooks and eyes, snap fastenings, or buckle attachments.

A characteristic of the inventionis that the plait and strip on the respective edges of the divided front are so constructed that each will retain its normal position adjacent the inner surface of the divided front while the coat is wornfor walking purposes and will only increase the width of the skirt. when the wearer assumes a sitting position or extends the knees.

In the accompanying drawing which illustrate this invention :Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing one construction of the garment with the front open and the extending plait unfastened ready for use. Figure 2 50 is a diagrammatic view in cross-section of the lower part of the garment shown in Figure 1. Figures 3 and 4- are similar views showinga modification of the garment shown in Figures 1 and 2, and Figure 5 is a view illustrating the utility of the improved garment.

Throughout the views similar parts are marked with like numerals of reference.

On to the lower part of the left-hand side of the coat is a single plait 1, one edge of the underfold being attached by stitching to the extreme edge 2 of the garment and the upper edges of both folds being similarly attached to the inside of the garment at 3. Onthe other edge of the coat is formed or fixed a strip 4 one edge of which is secured by stitching to the inside of the garment, preferably to the underfacing thereof as shown.

The free edge of the plait 1 is provided with a series of buttonholes 6 by which it can be attached to the strip 1 which is provided with a corresponding series of buttons 7 On the un-derfold of the plait 1 are a series of buttons 8 with which the buttonholes 6 can be engaged when it is desired to fold the plait out of use. To ensure that the plait llies snugly against the inner side of the garment when not in use, a snap fastening 10 is provided, and to similarly retain the strip 4 in position a snap fastening 11 is provided.

The plait 1 is made by folding a single strip of material on itself and then sewing the two parts of the fold together by a row of stitches 12 located as close to the fold as possible. The

underpart of the plait 1 and the strip 4 may conveniently form part of the under-facing 5.

The width to which the skirt of the garment can be extended may be further increased by making the strip 4 and the underfacing 5 as a plait as shown in Figures 3 and 4 in which case an additional snap fastening 13 is provided. In the construction shown in these figures the plait 1 is made out of two strips of material sewn together at the folded edge.

What I claim is A garment of the extending skirt type with a divided front, having one edge of the divided front formed, adjacent its lower edge, with a narrow plait, which latter extends up wards for a short distance and is secured to k opposite divided front and means for interengaging the said strip with the plait, and securing the plait and the strip to the edges of the garment carrying them when same are not in use.
