TROUSERS.

Our invention relates to a new and useful improvement in trousers and it relates more particularly to a novel construction in the art of making trousers whereby the inner flap or buttonhole band orstrip heretofore commonly employed on the front Hap of trousers, is entirely eliminated and whereby,-

moreover, not only7 is said buttonhole band or strip eliminated but the front buttons of the trousers are also eliminated.

Our invention further relates to a novel construction in trousers whereby the front of the trousers is closed by means of a fastening device, preferably of a continuous character, such as described, for instance, in United States Letters Patent No 1,219,881, secured to the inner surface of the flap at a suitable distance from the edge thereof so as to be entirely concealed from view.

Our invention further consists of a novel construction in trousers, whereby the flap of the trousers is reinforced or stilfened by means ofa suitable interior lining ply or haircloth, or the like, and whereby the thus reinforced or stiffened flap is secured to the opposed edge of the front opening of the trousers, by means of a fastening device spaced a suitable distance inwardly of the free edge of the flap; said flap being caused to lie fiat against the body of the trousers in all positions or postures 'of the wearer or of the user by virtue of the novel construction thereof.

Our invention relates more particularly to an improvement in trouser flaps of the character disclosed in our co-pending application, Serial No. 208,67 8, liled July 27th, 1927, whereby the fastening means is concealed not only from without by the outer reinforced or stiffened flap, but whereby said fastening means is also concealed or shielded from within by means of a novel 'form-retaining, inner flap of our novel construction, so as to prevent any Contact between said fastener and the body of the wearer or the undergarments.

For the purpose of illustrating our invention, we have shown in the Iaccompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by us, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various intrumentalities of which our invention consists can' be variously arranged and organized and that our invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

The two front halves 1 and 2 of the trouser instead of being united by the usual double front Hap heretofore commonly em* ployed, with the inner Hap provided with a row of buttonholes and a corresponding row of buttons on the opposed half of the front of the trousers, is merely provided with a pair of opposed

valong the juxtaposed vertical edges of the two halves 1 and 2 respectively, of the trousers, between which flaps 3 and 4 a continu-- ous fastening device is provided in a conceal'ed manner.

The front flap 3 is composed of the cloth 5 composing the trousers, which is folded at 6 upon itse f to provide an inturned edge 7. An inner lining fabric ply 8 is provided with an inturned edge 9, suitably stitched to the inturned edge 7 of the cloth 5 by means of the row of vertical stitches 10 in a manner shown particularly in Figure 5.

A stiiening ply 11 is interposed between the cloth 5 and the lining fabric 8, with the outer vertical edge of said stiffening ply extending in between the body of cloth 5 and the inturned edge 7 thereof so as to stiien the Hap 3 to the outermost edge 6 thereof.

The fastening device employed may be of any suitable form although the one particularly illustrated is of the type described in the United States Letters Patent No. 1,219,-

This fastening device comprises chiefly tape 16 is then folded about the free edges of said fastener tape 14, stifening ply 11 and lining ply .8and suitably secured by by a row of vertical stitches 17. A fourth row of vertical stitches 18 extending through the two folds of the binder tape 16 as well as through the fastener band 14, lining ply 8 and stiffening ply 11 as well as through the cloth 5, secures the fastener and lining assembly to the front cloth body 5 and thus completes the front half 1 of the trousers with the vertical row of fasteners 12 disposed a suitable distance inwardly of the outer edge 6 of the front flap 3 and substantially arallel thereto.

The sti ening ply 11 of the front fla 3 may be of any suitable material althoug in the preferred embodiment of our invention a fabric is employed which is composedv of a. set of limp cotton or other vegetable fibre threads interlaced with a second series or set of relativel stiff hair strands at ri ht angle to the rst set of limp threads.

By this means a greater transverse stiffness is imparted to the flap 3, together with a lesser longitudinal stiffness. f

The cloth 21 of the opposed half 2 of the front of the trousers is folded back upon itself at 22. The rear flap 4 lis composed chiefiy of the stifening fabric ply 23 of suitable width, and extending vertically, and preferably formed of duck or the like, which is lined front and back with the lining fabric 24 vfolded around thefreeedge of the stilfening ply 23 at 25, so as to form a front layer 26. A` row of stitches 27 extending parallel to the edge 25 and through the

24 and 26 and the intermediate duck stiifening ply 23, serves to secure the edge of the stiifening ply to the two folds of lining ply. The fastener band 15, carrying the row of metallic fasteners 13 is then secured to the folded edge of the cloth 2l by means of a row of vertical stitches 28 which extend through the stiffening ply 23, the lining ply 26, the fastening band 15 and the fold 22 of the cloth 21 as well asthe body of the cloth 21, as shown particularly in Figure 5. The opposed half of the trousers 2 is then finished by folding under the inner edge of the lining 24 as at 29 and securing the same to the cloth 21 by means of a row of vertical stitches 30.

Due to the relatively greater transverse rigidity or stiffness of the front flap 3 and its relatively losser vertical or longitudinal stiffness, said front flap 3 will lie flat against the opposed half 2 of the trousers in all postures of the wearer so as not only to concoal the

12 and 13 but so as also to present a neat and dressed appearance at all times. l

By means of the novel inner flap 4 the

fasteners

12 and 13 are also concealed from within and hence retained out of contact at all times with the body of the wearer or ont of contact with undergarments.

Due to the stiffening ply 23 in the inner flap 4, said inner flap 4 will retain its shape while in use and will resist any tendency to be drawn aside and thus to expose the fas teners 12 and 13, due to frictional contact with undergarments or the body.

Due to the novel relation of the fastening means and the construction of the outer flap, said flap will have no tendency to spread open or buckle when the trousers are in use, both of which disadvantages the trousers of present construction so conspicuously possess.

The above novel construction in trousers, not only produce a front closure of a superior quality and appearance, and free of certain defect-s of trousers made heretofore but said novel construction in trousers also substantially reduces the material and labor heretofore consumed in finishing the front portion of trousers,. with a corresponding saving in the ultimate cost thereof.

By the above novel construction in trousers, moreover, the appearance of the front of the trousers is further enhanced by the fact that the outer flap 1 is considerably thinner and is composed of fewer layers orIrv plies than the fiaps heretofore employed on trousers, and by virtue of the fact that the Ion buttonhole strip or inner flap as well as the v enumerated as desirable in the statemente of the invention and the above description and while we have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been fou/nd in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. Trousers or the like, comprising two separable juxtaposed parts having their edges in overlapping relation to each other, a dap formed on each of said edges, a two part continuous and separable fastening device extending longitudinally of said edges; one half of said fastening device being secured to the juxtaposed surface of each of said flaps, spaced a suitable distance inwardly of the free edges of the respective flaps, a textile stiifening ply in the inner flap intermediate of the free edge thereof, and the corresponding half of the fastening device, and

an operating slide common to the two halves of said continuous and separable fastening device and slidably carried thereby; said inner flap being adapted to shield said fastening device from contact with theundergarments or the body of the wearer and said outer flap being adapted to conceal said fastening device from view exteriorly.

2. Trousers or the like, comprising two separable juxtaposed parts having their edges in overlapping relation to each other, a flap formed on each of said edges, a two part continuous and separable fastening device extending longitudinally of said edges, one half of said fastening device being secured to the juxtaposed surface of each of said flaps, spaced a suitable distance inwardly of the free edges thereof, a textile stiffening ply in each of said aps intermediater of the free edge thereof and the corresponding half of the separable fastening device secured thereto, and an operating slide common to the.two halves of said continuous and separable fastening device and slidably carried thereby; said inner flap being adapted to shield said fastening device from con-l tact with the body or undergarments of the wearer and the textile stiifening ply in said outer iiap being adapted to prevent the separation of the free edge of said outer flap from the juxtaposed part of the trouser when said fastening device is closed.

3. Trousers or the like, comprising two separable parts having their adjacent edges in overlapping relation to each other, thereby forming an outer flap, continuous and separable fastening means extending longitudinally of said flap along the inner face thereof, having one part thereof secured to said outer flap, spaced inwardly a suitable distance from the free edge of said outer iiap and having the other part thereof secured to the juxtaposed separable part of the trouser, an operating slide common to the two parts of said continuous fastening means, slidably carried thereby; said continuous fastening means and operating slide being concealed from view-by 'said outer flap, a textile stiifening ply in said outer flap intermediate the continuous fastening means and the free edge thereof, adapted to prevent the separation of said outer flap from the juxtaposed part of the trouser, along the free edge of said outer flap when the fastening means is closed, and an inner flap formed along the free edge of the overlapped portion of the trouser extending beyond the separable fastening means and being adapted to shield the latter from contact with the body and the undergarments of the wearer.

4. Trousers or the like, comprising two separable juxtaposed parts having their edges in overlapping relation to each other, a flap l10n formed on each of said edges, a two part continuous and separable fastening device extending longitudinally of said edges, one half of said fastening device being secured to the juxtaposed surface of each of said flaps, spaced a suitable distance inwardly of the free edges thereof, textile stiffening means in said inner flap; said inner flap being adapted to shield said fastening device from contact with the body and under gar- 110 ments of the `wearer, and a textile stiffening means in-said outer flap having greater stiffness transversely of said flap and lesser stiffness longitudinally thereof and being adapted to prevent the separation of the free and unattached edge of said outer flap from the juxtaposed part of the trouser, when said fastening device is closed.

5. Trousers or the like, comprising two separable parts having their adjacent edges ,120 in overlapping relation to each other, thereby forming an outer flap, continuous and separable fastening means-extending longitudinally of said flap along the inner face thereof, having one part thereof secured to said outer Hap, spaced inwardly a suitable distance from the free edge thereof and having the other part thereof secured to the juxtaposed'part of the trouser, an operating slide common to the two parts of said conthe overlapped portion of the trouser extending beyond the separable fastening means and being adapted to shield the latter from Contact with ille body and the under- 15 garments of the wearer.
