Description

(No Model) o. VANOOSTRUM.
GARMBNT.
Patented Dec. 15,1896lv WIM/8858:
ATTORNEYS.
N ITED OTTE VAN OOSTRUM, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
GARNI ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,060, dated December 15, 1896.
Application filed April 9, 1896.
Serial No. 586.885. (No model.)
To LZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Orrn VAN OosTRUM, of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new of will be held closed in an efficient manner and present a neater appearance than when fastened in the ordinary manner.
The invention consists in the novel features hereinafter particularly described, and defined in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view showing in use a vest embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary horizontal section taken through the vest at the opening, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the iiy portion of a pair of trousers embodying my invention.
In carrying out my invention the vest A, trousers B, or other garment is made so that the edges a b at the usual open portion of the garment will abut, as show-n clearly in Fig. 2, and such edges usually are formed of two thicknesses of material. To the garment thus formed there is secured along a line inward from the edge d a series of headed stunds c of any suitable form, the studs projecting from the inner surface of the garment. In the instance shown the back or base plates c of the studs are between the two thicknesses of fabric.
To the opposite edge D of the garment I secure a flap O, as by stitching d, and this flap extends across the point of meeting of the abutting edges and beneath the line of studs c. On the outer face of the fiap a series of fastening devices c are provided, these in the instance shown consisting of sockets adapted to receive the heads of the studs c and provided with any suitable spring-acting clutchplate for engaging the heads of the studs. The clutch-plates are each provided with arms f for disengaging the clutch-plates from the head, and all of said arms are suitably connected with a cord g, whereby when the free end g' of the cord is pulled all the studs will be released.
The special form of fastening devices, it will be understood, is of no moment.
By forming the vest or other garment with abutting edges at the opening therein and providing fastening devices on an additional garment it will be seen no overlapped edges appear on the outside and the fastening devices are not exposed to view.
The garments, such as vests, maybe provided with buttons, braid, or the like for the purpose of ornamentation.
I'Iaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A garment having abutting edge portions at its open part, an inner fiap secured along one ofvsuch edge portions and extending byits free edge beneath the opposite abutting edge portion, said opposite abutting edge portion at points inward from the extreme edge having a series of fasteners, at the inner surface, and the underlapping free edge of the said inner flap having fasteners on its outer surface, cooperating with those on the opposed inner surface of the said opposite edge portion, substantially as described.
tions at its open part, an inner iiap secured along one of such edge portions and extending by its free edge beneath the opposite abutting edge portion, said opposite abutting edge portion at points inward from the extreme edge having a series of fasteners, at the inner surface, and the underlapping free edge of outer surface, cooperating with those on the opposed inner surface of the said opposite edge portion and an operating-cord connected with one series of the fasteners for simultaneously releasing the same, substantially as described.
