Description

PATENTED SEPT. 20, 1904.
G. BURKLAND. INFANTS GARMENT.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 2, 1904.
I N0 MODEL.
UNITED STATES Patented September 20, 1904.
CARL BURKLAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
INFANTS GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 770,493, dated September 20, 1904.
Application filed January 2, 1904. Serial No. 187,442- (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL BURKLAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook-and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Infants Garments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved bodygarment in the nature of a shirt, coat, or jacket, the improvement being designed more especially for use in the construction of an undergarment or shirt for infants, but being applicable to other uses. I
The invention consists in the matters here-- inafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a front view of a garment embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same with one of the front flaps of the same open. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the garment, taken through the flaps and fastening devices on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
As shown in the said drawings, A indicates the rear portion or back of the garment, and B O forward continuations of the said back, which constitute front flaps that cover the front portion of the body when they are placed in overlapping relation. B indicates the under flap, and O the outer flap or the one which is folded over the under one when the garment is closed. At the side portion of the garment, at a point near the base of the flap B, is secured a fastening-tab D, the same being located on the inner face of the garment. On the outer face of the opposite side of the garment, adjacent to or near the base of said flap O,is secured a like fastening-tab E. Both of said tabs D and E extend forwardly from their point of attachment to the body of the garment, so that the free ends of said tabs are directed toward the front of the garment or toward the'free edges of the front flaps B and C. The free margins of both flaps and the said tabs D and E are provided with interlocking fastening devices. In the particular construction illustrated these fastening devices consist of buttonholes d and c in the tabs D and E and buttons t and 0, applied to the outer faces of said front flaps B and O. The tabs are shown as provided each with two buttonholes to alford adjustment of the garment to the size of the wearer.
In closing orbuttoning the garment made as described the flap B is first folded across the front of the body. The free end of the tab D is then folded over the outer surface of the flap B and the tab D secured to said flap as, for instance, by inserting the button 7) into one of the buttonholes d d of the tab D. The second or outer flap C is then folded across the body over the flap B and the tab E likewise secured to the free edge of the flap O by buttoning the tab to the flap or by proper engagement of the fastening devices employed, if other than buttons and buttonholes.
The garment illustrated is shownas provided with one set only of fastening-tabs D and E, with corresponding fastening means on the flaps B and C; but it will of course be understood that a plurality of such fastening devices may be employed, if in any case found desirable.
A garment made as described has the advantage of affording double thickness of material at the front of the body and at the same time providing a very simple and convenient means of securing and holding in place the free margins of the overlapping parts or flaps.
I claim as my invention 1. A body garment provided with front flaps adapted to overlap each other and with attaching-tabs adapted for fastening engagement with the free margins of the flaps at the front of the garment; said tabs being attached at the sides of the garment, one to the outer and the other to the inner face thereof.
2. A body garment provided with front flaps adapted to overlap each other and with attaching-tabs located at the sides of the gartabs being provided With detachable conneet- Witnesses:
other to the inner face thereof, the said tabs of two Witnesses, this 29th day of December, overlapping the free margins of the flaps at A. D. 1903.
ment and attached one to the outer and the ii my inventionI affix my signature, in presence the front of the garment and the flaps and CARL BURKLAND.
ing means, such as buttons and buttonholes. C. CLARENCE POOLE,
| In testimony that I claim the foregoing as l GEORGE R. WILKINS.
