ALEX BERNSTEIII, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHIRT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July II, 191%.
Application filed November 16, 1914. Serial No. 872,335.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEX BERNSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
The great objection to ready-made shirts has generally been due to ill-fitting of a collar upon the wearer. Although the body of the shirt and the sleeves may fit the person properly, it is obvious that the collar band may be of an incorrect size to permit the attachment of a collar thereon best adapted for the purposes and convenience of the wearer. Oftentimes the size of the collar which a person wears is entirely out of proportion to the size of the shirt body required, and consequently an ill-fitting shirt and collar is the result.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved construction of shirt, wherein the neck portion is extensible, thus adapting the same to be worn by a person with the assurance that a collar of the size worn by him readily will fit upon the neck band of the shirt. This object I accomplish in the manner and by the means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a shirt embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is an interior fragmentary view of the same.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the two views.
In the said drawing, .the reference numeral 1 indicates the neck and a portion of the body of the shirt, the same having attached at the back thereof an upstanding tab 2, and at the open front thereof two tabs 3 and l, which overlap one another, as shown in Fig. 1, when the shirt opening is closed. These tabs 8 and t are provided with suitable button holes 5, which register with one another when the shirt is buttoned up. The neck portion of the shirt intermediate the front and rear tabs is provided with oppositely disposed elastic V-shaped gussets 6, which permit an extension of the neck when necessary.
The operation is thought to be obvious from the description. Due to the extensible possibilities of the neck portion, it is obvious that it may be adapted to fit the neck of any wearer, and similarly a collar of practically any size may be attached thereon without causing a binding between the collar and neck band of the shirt.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not propose limiting myself otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
In a device of the class described, a shirt body, upstanding widely separated tabs at the front and rear of the neck portion thereof, and elastic \l-shaped gussets inserted in the shirt neck between said front and rear tabs.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALEX BERNSTEIN.
