UNITED STATES yPATENT OEE ICE.
y GEORGE W. BOWERS, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGN OR OF ONE- HALF TO CHARLES E. NIOKERSON, OF SAME PLACE.
NECKTI E-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,697, dated June 19, 1883.
` Application tiled December l, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. BowEEs, of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and 'State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Al\Tecl tie-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention-relates to improvements in that class of necktie-fasteners in which a spring 1o is used for attaching the necktie to the collarbutton; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
l Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l shows the back of a necktie provided with my new Vnecktie-fastener. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of thesame, taken on the line :c x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the spring and attaching-plate. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line y y of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 shows a modified form of fastener attached to the back of a necktie.
A represents a necktie. B represents the spring for attaching the necktie to the collarbutton C, as shown in Fig. 2, and D represents a metallic plate, which I prefer to use for attaching the spring B to the back of the necktie. The ends of the spring B might be secured to the plate D by soldering, or by 3 5 means of separate 'lstaples5 but I prefer to secure them by means of the tongues t' i, cut out from the body of the plate and clinched over the ends of the spring, as shown clearly in Figs. 1,4,and 5; and the plate D is by preference secured to the back of the necktie by 4o means of the pointed tongues of metal e e, formed at the edges of the plate, which are. adapted to be forced through some of the material of the necktie and clinched, as will be clearly understood from the drawings. The spring B may be slightly bent in the center to fit over the neck of the collar-button, as shown at a, Figs. 1 and 3; or it may be looped or folded in the center, as shown at a, Fig. 5; and the spring is so attached to the necktie 5o that the act of putting the necktie on will cause the spring to exert an upward tension upon the necktie, and thus serve not only to hold the necktie securely upon the collar-button, but also to hold it well up under the folds 55 or laps of the collar.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a necktie-fastener, the combination, 6o with a spring having its center bent or looped, of a plate adapted to be attached to the necktie,` and` providedwith the tongues fi, cut out from the body of the said plate and bent over the ends of the said spring, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a necktie-fastener, the combination, with the spring B, having its center bent or looped, of the plate D, provided with spurs e, for securing it to the tie, and with the tongues 7o 11, for securing the ends of the spring' to the plate, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE W. BOWERS.
