CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,154, dated J` une 1 4, 1892.
Application filed January 22, 1892. Serial No. 418,925. (No model.)
To lf/ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HANNAH FLORETTA QEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Odell, in the countyof Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Clasp, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in clasps, and has special reference to a clasp adapted for connecting the ends of ladies veils, although, as will hereinafter appear, it may be used for various other purposes.
The objects of my invention are to produce a cheap and sim ple clasp forgencral purposes, and more particularly for thcabove purpose, and to so construct the same as to be adjustable ou the ends of the veil and adapted for easy connection and disconnection.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a clasp constructed in accordance with1nyinvention,thesalnebeingshown in connection with the ends of a veil. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the clasps orsections.

In constructing the clasp for employment in connection with the two ends of a veil two clasp-sections are utilized, and as their constructions are the same a description of one will sufce.
As will hereinafter appear the clasps may be utilized in various other ways, such as for holding tickets, hose-supporters, sashes, the.
In constructing a clasp-section I employ a section ot' springwire of suitable tensile strength, bending the same at its center, so as to form a crotch l and the opposite terminals 2, which are continued parallel to each other for some distance for the purpose of forming the crotch. After forming the crotch the terminals are outwardly curved, as at 3, to form spring-jaws, and at their extremities are provided with balls 4, which contact with each other and are separable for the purpose of giving admission to the inside of the clasp.
In operation as a veil-holder or clasp the ends of the veil are caught in the crotches of two clasp-sections constructed as described, and these ends are adj ustedso that when the clasp-sections meet the veil will be suiiciently tight around the face of the wearer. hen the veil is in position, in orderto form a connection between the ends of the same the two clasp-sections are pushed together, the springpressed balls separating so as to permit of an interlocking of the jaws of the same.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by the employment of this clasp for the purpose of fastening veils many advantages arc secured over the old manner of tying the same. IIeretofore it was very awkward for a lady to tie her veil, she usually requiring assistance when so doing, and also in untying the same, and when tied an unsightly knot appeared at the back of her head. A further disadvantage from tying the veil is that the ends of the same become raveled, so that before the veil has worn to such an extent as to become useless its ends have raveled to such an extent as to render it useless and too short to tie, so that longer veils than were necessary had to be purchased in order to overcome such disadvantages or else if a vcil of a proper size were bought it soon became too short. By my invention, however, I avoid these objections and enable the wearer to purchase a veil of proper length and preserve the ends against raveling, so that the veil is useful until entirely worn out, and, furthermore, makes a much neater appearance when in use. Many other uses will be found for this clasp which are not necessary to be fully enumerated or specifically mentioned.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-w lhe clasp comprising two like members, each formed of wire and composed of aholding or securing portion recurved to form au enlarged loop, the free ends of which are bent. adjacent to each other and provided with balls or projections, su bstantiallyas speciiied.
