Description

G. 0. ANDERSON.
' BUCKLE.
APPLICATION IILIBD Arms, 1907.
Patented June 29, 1909.
WITNESSES A roze/v5 Y5 CHRISTIAN O. ANDERSON, OF BRIGIIAM, UTAH.
BUCKLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1909.
Application filed April 9, 1907. Serial No. 367,161.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN O. ANDER- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brigham city, in the county of Boxelder and State of Utah, have invented. a new and useful Buckle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a buckle of novel form to be used more particularly on harness but may be used for other purposes when found convenient.
The objects of the invention are, the provision, in a merchantable form, of a device of the above mentioned class, which shall be inexpensive to manufacture, facile in operation, and devoid of complicated parts.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a face view of a buckle permanently attached to one strap and temporarily holding a second strap. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View on the line 2 2. Fig. 3 is a per-- spective view of the buckle detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate the same parts on all the figures.
The buckle, indicated by the numeral 1, comprises, in the form shown, two parallel side plates 2, 3 curved as shown, joined at one end by a cylindrical cross bar 4 and at their opposite ends by a somewhat flattened bar 5. From the middle portion of the underside of the flattened bar 5 depends, for a short distance, a hook 6 which then bends rearwardly for a little way and ends in a blunt point 7.
One end of strap 8 is bent around the cylindrical bar 4 from below upward and stitched to the body of the strap in the usual manner. A wide leather loop 9 is fastened to the strap by the same stitching just back of the cross bar 4. Fastened to the strap 8 by means of a rivet 10 is a shield or protector ll of leather that lies between the buckle and the side of a horse to prevent the animal from becoming chafed by the irregular surface presented by the buckle and strap. The shield is usually made ornamental to improve the appearance of the fastening. A second strap 12 provided with a series of central openings 13 is fastened to the buckle by first passing it through a slit 14 in the shield, then up through the buckle and after drawing it sulliciently tight, the hook or tongue 6 is pushed through the nearest hole 13 and the end of the strap slipped under the loop 9.
A buckle constructed as above described presents a neat and attractive appearance, the tongue is invisible but affords a secure fastening means for the strap 12, and the looped strap 3 not being cut for the tongue, is stronger where it bends around the cross bar 4 than in buckles of ordinary construction.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed isr- In a device of the class described, a cylindrical cross bar and an oval cross bar; parallel side plates uniting the terminals of the cross bars, terminated thereat, and having their lower edges downwardly curved below the lower faces of the cross bars; a tongue integral with the oval cross bar, projecting therefrom in substantial alinement with the side plates and having its terminal up-lleXed end extended above the plane of the upper edges of the side plates.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIAN O. ANDERSON.
