Description

s. F. H OWLAND. Glove and Shoe Buttoners..
No. 215,612. Patented May 20,1879.
Wiiesses Inventor:
N-PEI'FRS, PHOYO-UYMGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
SAMUEL F. HOWLAND, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVE AND SHOE BUTTONERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,612, dated May 20, 1879; application filed May 16, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL F. HOWLAND, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Glove and Shoe Buttoners, of which the following is a description.
The object of my invention is to make a simple, cheap, neat, and strong combined glove and shoe buttoner, without superfluous material, and small enough to be readily carried in the pocket-book.
My improvement consists in a buttoner formed of wire, with a loop at each end, one of said loops being adapted for buttoning shoes and the other for but-toning gloves, andhaving a band permanently affixed at or near its central portion, so as to conceal the ends of the wire and brace the sides laterally.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a buttoner embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a view showing the manner of using the same in buttoning a glove.
A designates the glove-buttoner, and B the shoe-buttoner. They are shown as formed by bending a single piece of wire of steel or other material so as to form two loops, and so that the ends of the wire will come together about midway between the two loops.
For the purpose of concealing the ends of the wire, strengthening the buttoner, and staying or bracing the sides of the loops laterally, I employ a broad band or clasp of metal, 0, which is flattened sufficiently to receive the two wires when brought near together, and which is, preferably, secured thereto by soldering. The proper shape is then given to the buttoner by passing through each loop a former of the size and shape required.
While either of the buttoners is in use, the other constitutes a handle.
It will be seen that by my invention I produce a very serviceable and cheap combined glove and shoe buttoner, which. owing to the permanently-fixed band, may be made very light, neat, and strong.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A buttoner formed of wire, with a loop at each end, one of said loops being adapted for buttoning shoes and the other for buttoning gloves, and having a band permanently aflixed at or near its central portion, so as to conceal the ends of the wire and brace the sides laterally, substantially as specified.
