HENRY N. PERVEAR, ()F PAVTUOKET, RHODE ISLAND.
BRACELET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,111, dated May 16, 1882.
Application filed September 16, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY N. PERVEAR, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Bracelets; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact descriptio'n thereof.
My invention relates to thatvariety of bracelets known as the band-bracelet, which is composed of a continuous strip of elastic sheet metal.
My improvement consists in providing the central portion of such a bracelet with a plate or box secured thereto, whereby such portion of the bracelet is made rigid and assumes the appearance of a box-bracelet.
A bracelet composed of a plain strip of elastic sheet metal is very liable to lose its shape during use, owing to the thinness of the material; and such bracelets cannot be provided with the prevailing style of fine ornament in relief, because such ornament cannot be hardsoldered to the band without destroying the elasticity of the metal, and if softsoldered thereto the constant bending of the band will disengage more or less of the ornament. Such bracelets, therefore, have not been durable in shape, and have presented a comparatively cheap appearance.
The object of my improvement is to produce a bracelet having elastic ends and a rigid central portion, whereby all the advantages of a band-bracelet are present, and yet the shape of the article will be'preserved. It will resemble a superior article or box-bracelet when on the arm, and may be highly ornamented in relief, if desired.
In the drawing a bracelet embodying my improvement is illustrated in perspective.
A is the continuous strip of elastic sheet metal composing the band proper, and B is the plate or box secured to the central portion thereof, and covering about one-half of the bracelet. The member 13 may have a plain face, if desired, but is preferably ornamented in relief, the said ornament being secured to the member by hard soldering before said member is attached to the band A. The plate or box B is secured to the band by soft solder, (which will not destroy the elasticity of the band,) or by rivets, tangs, or by folding the edges of said member around the edges of the band. ,That portion of the bracelet to which the member 15 is attached will be rigid, therefore, while the end portions will be elastic, and will open or close spontaneously, according as they are arranged to operate. If they open spontaneously, as is usual, a fastening device should be employed to holdthem closed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The improved band-bracelet herein described, consisting of a strip, A, of elastic material, and a box member, B, rigidly secured throughout its length tothe exterior of the oentral portion of said strip and projecting above' the same. v 2. The strip or band A, having elastic end portions, combined with the box member B, rigidly secured throughout to the band, be tween its ends, substantially as shown and described.
