To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MALLE LITTLE, (now by marriage MALLE LITTLE RUssELL,) a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Binders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in barrettes and has particular reference to such devices adapted to be secured to and worn upon a braid or plait.

An important object of the invention is to provide novel and simple means for holding the barrette upon the braid.

A further object of the invention is to provide a barrette which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture'and attractive in appearance.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral designates the body portion of the barrette,

shown as substantially elliptical, while the same may be made in other shapes. The body portion 5 is longitudinally curved or bowed, with its concave surface adapted to be arranged adjacent the braid.

Secured to the inner side of the body portion 5 at one end thereof, is a pair of spaced posts 6, connected by a transverse pin adapted to be surrounded or engaged by an elastic band 7. This elastic band also engages with a hook S secured to the opposite end of the body portion 5, upon the inner side thereof. The hook 8 is so constructed that it normally prevents the separation of the band 7 and body portion 5,while the band is adapted to detachably engage the hook 8.

In the use of the barrette, the elastic band 7 is disconnected from the hook 8 and the concave side of the body portion 5 is pre sented to the braid, and the comb-like structure 9 forced into the braid, thus preventing downward movement thereof. The elastic band 7 is then passed about the braid and secured to the hook 8, the body portion 5 and elastic band 7 encircling the braid. In Fig. 1 one barrette is arranged at the top of the braid and another one near its lower end.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the sub joined claim.

Having thus described the invention, I claim: 7 i

A barrette of the character described, comprising a longitudinally curved body portion, a pair of posts secured to the rear side of the body portion near one end thereof and connected by a transverse pin, a hook secured to the rear side of the body portion near the opposite end thereof and having its hooked end facing outwardly, an elastic band passed about the transverse pin and adapted to be passed over the hook, and a comb-like structure secured to the rear side of the body portion near the longitudinal edge thereof and having teeth projecting inwardly in proximity to the elastic band.
