BARRETTE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARNOLD Sci-rattan, a citizen of Switzerland, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Barrette, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX act description.

This invention relates to a new and improved barrette to be used in the back of a womans head to catch up the stray locks and hold them in position, besides adding an attractive ornament to the hair.

It has been found extremely difficult with such types of barrettes as are now on the market, to maintain them in the hair in a fixed position after having once been.in serted, without the danger of losing them.

An object. therefore, of this invention is to provide abarrette which,when once placed in the hair, will be securely locked in position by gripping the strands of hair, and thus keeping the stray locks in place, and avoiding the danger of displacement or loss.

A further object of this invention is to provide a barrette which will be simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, strong, durable, ornamental, and readily attached and detached.

These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of a womans head, showing the barrette attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the barrette, showing the parts in their open or receptive position, ready to be inserted in the hair; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section similar to Fig. 2, showing the parts in position after having been inserted in the hair, such that the relatively-movable teeth will lock the hair bet-ween them; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section.

Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device, 1 indicates the barrette, which is secured in any suitable position in the hair, as for example at the back of the head, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The barrette may be formed of two relatively Specification of Letters Patent.

movable members 2 and 3, in the form of combs having suitable teeth which are adapted to move past each other from the position illustrated in Fig. 2 to the posi tion illustrated in Fig. 3. The members 2 and 3 are held normally in the locking position illustrated in Fig. 3 by means of a spring 4 secured in one of the members 2 and engaging the. other member 3.

The comb or member 3 is preferably formed with a back 5, having teeth 6 extending therefrom in spaced relation. These teeth may be form-ed loop-shaped, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and bordering the teeth 7 provided on the comb 3 on the sides and ends thereof. The teeth 7 may be hookshaped, as illustrated in the drawings, so as to retain the hair within the cavity formed between the teeth on the comb 3 and the teeth on the comb 2, or they may be straight and utilize the gripping action between the edges of the relatively-movable teeth, to grip the hair.

For the purpose of limiting the movement of the comb 3 relative to the comb 2, there is provided in the comb 3 a slot 8, which is engaged by a pin 9 secured in the comb 2. This mechanism forms a stop, which, while simple in construction, will positively limit the relative movement of the combs, so that when the comb 3 is in its inmost position relative to the comb 2, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the teeth 7 will lie within the teeth 6, leaving no obstructions between the teeth, so that the hair will readily enter.

The barrette is preferably arcuate in form, so as to fit nicely over the hair, and may itself form the ornamental feature or may be secured to an ornam ntal backing.

It will thus be seen that there is provided a simple and efficient device which can readily be inserted in the hair, either by drawing or forcing in straight, and when once inserted, will positively grip the hair, and maintain its position without the necessity of manipulating a separate catch. It will also be seen that it can be readily released when it is desired to remove the same from the hair.

While I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof. but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations and modifications which may come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A. barrette, comprising a pair of slidingly connected combs, teeth radiating from one of said combs, and teeth radiating from the other of said combs and located bordering said first-mentioned teeth on the sides and ends thereof.

2. The combination With a comb having radiating teeth, of a comb slidingly connected to said firstmentioned comb and having loop-shaped teeth bordering said first-mentioned teeth on the sides and ends thereof, a spring interposed between one end of said first-mentioned comb and the corresponding end of said second mentioned comb and adapted to urge said firstmentioned comb to a position in which the teeth thereon are disposed opposite the spaces between the teeth on said secondmentioned comb, and a stop for limiting the motion of said first-mentioned comb due to said spring.

3. The combination With an arcuate comb, having teeth thereon projecting in spaced relation from each other, of an arcuate comb slidingly connected to said first-mentioned comb and having loop shaped teeth bordering said first-mentioned teeth on the sides and ends thereof, a spring adapted to cause a relative movement of said combs, said first-mentioned comb having a slot therein, and a pin secured to said secondmentioned comb and extending through said slot, adapted to limit the relative movement of said combs.
