Description

Dec. 5, 1950 J. TAREN ET AL TEETH-LOCKING COMB Filed May 18, 1948 Jack Tami =70, Aaron Leon, 4/ M A 7'TORNEY.
Patented Dec. 5, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims. 1 This invention relates to combs and more particularly to teeth-locking combs.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved comb of the character stated, constructed and arranged with fixed teeth and with spring-actuated clamping teeth, for
clamping hair between said teeth for holding the hair in place, and for holding the comb in an attractive position in the hair as an ornament.
Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter as this specification progresses.
'The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawing which forms a part of this specification and in which:
Fig. l is a perspective of the comb with its clampin teeth held against its fixed teeth.
member of the comb.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary longitudinal section of the comb taken on line 8-3 of Fig. 3, showing the slidable comb member held under spring pressure in position with its clamping teeth against the teeth of the fixed comb member.
Fig. 9 is a view like Fig. 8 except that the slidable comb member is shown pressed inwardly against spring tension with the teeth of said comb member moved away from the teeth of the fixed comb member.
Fig. 10 is a view of the pressure spring for the slidable comb member.
Referring more particularly to the drawing in which the same parts are designated by the same reference numerals in all of the figures, the comb includes generally a fixed-comb memher I, a slidable comb member 2, a spring 3 acting upon said slidable comb member to force the teeth thereof against the teeth of said fixedcomb member, and a cover 4 for the back of said fixed comb member for holding said slidable comb member in operative position in said fixedcomb member.
The fixed-comb member 1 comprises a laterally curved channel back 5, and a plurality of fixed teeth 6 depending from the lower wall I of said back in spaced relation from one end of said back to the other, there being openings 8 in said lower wall of said back between said fixed teeth 6. One end of said channel back 5 is closed by an end wall 9, while the other end of said channel back is open as indicated at In.
The slidable comb member 2 comprises a laterally curved solid plunger back H and a plurality of clamp teeth i2 depending from the lower side of said back in spaced relation from one end of said back to the other, there being a slot E3 in said back extending longitudinally from the rear end thereof, for the purpose hereinafter more fully described.
The back cover t is in the form of an inverted channel comprising an upper wall It, a pair of side walls i5 depending from said upper walls, and an end wall it closing one end of the cover, the other end ll of said cover being open, the lower edges of said side walls l5 being formed with inturned flanges I8, respectively.
The comb is assembled as follows:
The slidable comb member 2 is positioned within the fixed comb member l by first placing the spring 3 in the slot l3 in the back ll of said slidable comb member and compressing said spring inwardly from its outer end against the inner end of said slot 43, and then introducing the clamp teeth $2 of said slidable comb memher 2 downwardly through the channel back 5 of the fixed-comb member I and through the slots 8, respectively, in the lower wall I of said channel back, until the back I! of said slidable comb member 2 is within the channel back 5 of the fixed-comb member I, with the lower side of said back H resting upon said lower wall 1 of said channel back 5, and with the outer end of the spring 3 engaging the end wall 9 of said channel back 5 and forcing the slidable comb member 2 forwardly, so that its clamp teeth l2 engage the adjacent fixed teeth 6 of the fixed comb member E, and the forward end of the back I! of the slidable comb member 2 projects forwardly beyond the open end ll! of the channel back 5 of the fixed-comb member I, as shown in Fig. 1 or" the drawing. The inverted channel cover is then placed over the channel back 5 of the fixed-comb member l by slipping the forward open end i! of said cover over the closed end 9 of said channel back, with the inturned flanges I8 on the lower edges of the side walls E5 of said cover extending under the lower side edges !9 of the channel back 5 of the fixedcomb member until the forward open end I! of said cover coincides with the forward open end In of said channel back 5 and the rear end wall I8 of cover engages the rear end wall 9 of said channel back of the fixed comb member I, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, whereby the cover closes the upper open side of the channel back 5 of the fixed-comb member I and retains the slidable comb member 2 in operative position within the fixed comb member I, and said cover further provides a neat finish for the .back of the comb.
The 'operation of the-comb is as'foll'owsz By pressing the forward projecting end of the back ll of the slidable comb member 2, as shown in Fig. 1, said member is pressed rearwardly in the fixed comb member I, against the tension of the spring 3, until the clamp teeth .12 .are spaced rearwardly sufficiently from thefiXed teeth 6,.respectively, as shown in Fig. 2. 'The spaced teeth 6 and I 2 of the comb are then forced into the hair, which is gathered into a suitable arrangement and form, and the I pressure I against the .forward end of the back 5 of the slidable comb memher 2 ,is then released, whereupon the spring 3 .forces the slidable comb member ,2 forwardly in the fixed comb member I until the hair is clamped and held between the :clamp teeth I2 and .the fixed teeth 5 .of the comb thus locking the hair in position in thearrangementandform in which it isgathered, and locking the comb in the hair in an .attractive position so that the vcomb provides .an ornament ior the hair.
To unlock and remove the comb from thehair it is only nece sa y to press .the forward .end .or the back I I of the slidable comb member 2 ,rear- Wardly against the tension of the spring v3, until iheclamp-teeth l2 of said slidable comb member are spaced from the fixed-teeth 6 of the fixed comb member I, so that the teeth of the comb release the hair, whereupon the comb is with- .drawn from the hair.
'The cover A maybe made of various metals, plastics and other materials and of various ornamental designs, and the cover being detachable,
4 member formed with a back slidably fitted in said channel back, and with pointed clamp teeth depending from said slidable back between said fixed teeth, a spring interposed between said fixed comb member and said slidable comb member for normally holding said slidable member in position with one side of its clamp teeth against the adjacent side of said fixed teeth of said fixed comb member and with the forward end of said slidable back projecting beyond the forward end of said channel back to be pressed to space said clamp teeth from said fixed teeth.
2. A comb as claimed in claim 1 including a cover slidably fitted over said channel back of said fixed comb member for closing the upper side of said channel back and for engaging the back of said slidable comb member for holding said slidable comb member within said comb member.
3. A comb as characterized by claim 1 includinganinverted channel cover slidably fitted-over said channel back of .said 'fi-xed comb member for-closing the upper side of said channel back and for engagin the back of said slidable comb member for holding said slidable comb member Within said fixed .comb member, the lower edges of the side walls of said inverted channel cover being formed with inturned longitudinal flanges for extending under the lower longitudinal edges of .said channel back of said fixedcomb member.
