2 Claims. (Cl. 1375-33) This invention relates generally to hair dressers implements and has particular reference to a hair curling device.

An object of the invention is to provide a simplified and eflicient device of this type which may be equally serviceable in a beauty parlor or in the home, the latter as when the device is used by a lady in dressing her own hair, and the former, that is to say in a beauty parlor, where the hair dressing operation is performed by an attendant.

Another object is to provide an improved device of this character which is capable of being used for producing different results, these latter including use with small quantities of hair, wherein curls of small diameter are produced, as well as use with large or heavy quantities of hair where relatively large curls may be provided.

Similarly, in accordance with yet another object, the improved apparatus may be used with the treatment of short hair, as well as with relatively long hair.

A feature of the invention is a manipulable holder or core, which is grooved or split at one or both ends, and with surface grooves connecting the end grooves. With the groove features is used a simplified and highly efficient pin or clip, a so called bobby pin, the latter being capable of use in association with the split or grooved features both longitudinally and crosswise.

A still further object is to provide a device of this kind which may be manufactured at reasonable cost and which will be such as to easily withstand ordinary usage and retain its eflicient working qualities for a relatively long period of time.

With the above indicated objects and advantages in view as well as others which will hereinafter appear, the invention resides in certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, the essential features of which are herein fully described and illlustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 1 is an elevational viewof a holder or core constructed in accordance with this invention.

Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively views of the opposite ends of the device of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the curling apparatus in one working position; and

Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of said apparatus in another working position, this view showing the clip, as aforesaid, in crosswise position.

Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing a modification; and Fig. 'I is an end view of Fig. 6.

Referring in detail to said drawing, a holder or manipulable core ID, of any suitable material, such as a member of the plastic type, has, at

The surface grooves 20-23, as well as said end slits are sufliciently wide to receive the wire of a clip 30, consisting of two legs, as shown. each leg being like the other, and being connected by a bend 3| of said wire. Said surface grooves are sufliciently deep to admit one leg of said clip, said leg being slidable in the groove as for being passed under a roll or curl 33 of hair when placed on an end of the body Ill. Since the legs of the clip 33 have rounded ends 35, each alike, one of -said legs passes suitably along the inner side of the curl 33, the space between said legs being also appropriate for this purpose.

The hair 40 treated on the device shown on Fig. 5 is represented as being relatively short, this hair also being shown as close to and ending at the head H of a user and in this instance the pin 30 is shown in a crosswise position.

In the handle or core III of Fig. 6 is shown a comb 4|, which may be relatively short, since said handle also acts as a handle for the comb.

The comb 4| at its end as shown is of such structural depth of material that it may be slid into a slit l3, As herein shown the comb ll with teeth 42 has on its body or back portion a rib 43, the latter extending oppositely and throughout the length of the comb, said rib being so located as to'leave a portion 44 of said body acting as another rib, the rib 43 being in the slit I2 and the rib 44 in said slit l3.

When the comb l I, which may be of any dimensions and in different shapes, is operated on a user's hair, the latter may be rolled on any selected side of the comb, and said comb may be slid into another slit, as I2, with the rib 43 extending into the slit I3. I

Variations may be resorted to within the scope or the invention and portions or the improvements may be used without others.

I claim: I 1. In a hair curler device, in combination, a solid, elongated, cylindrical member, said member being tapered at one end narrowing towards said end, said member having at both ends respective pairs of rectangularly disposed intersecting open slits, said slits forming a cross shaped depression of limited extension in an inward direction into said member, longitudinal grooves arranged parallel on the surface of said member and in alignment. with said slits, so as to form.
