(Cl. 132-35) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair dressing implements, and more particularly to a combined comb and hair curler.

An important object of the present invention is to provide a hair-winding mandrel on which strands of hair may be wound for curling the same and also providing the mandrel with longitudinally spaced teeth for use as a comb, when desired.

A. further object of the invention is to provide a hair curling device of this character by means of which the teeth carried thereby are adapted for retracting movement into the body of the curler out of contact with the hair when the same is wound thereon and when it is desired to remove the curler from the curl of hair.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, e'icient and reliable in use, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational View.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional View.

Figure 3 is an enlarged end elevational view.

Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary longitudinal sectional View.

Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on a line 5-5 of Figure 4.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates an elongated body preferably having rounded side edges, as indicated in Figures 3 and 5 of the drawing, and formed with a longitudinally extending passage 6 open at the rear end of the body.

A plurality of inclined openings or passages I are formed in longitudinally spaced relation in one edge of the body and communicate at their ends with the passage B. The inner ends of the openings 'I are flared, as indicated at 8, to merge with the passage 6.

The edge of the body provided with the openings 'l tapers toward its front end and a portion of the body adjacent its rear end is free of the openings 1 to provide a handle 9.

A rod I0 is slidably mounted in the passage 6 and from which a plurality of resilient teeth II project laterally outwardly of the body through the openings "I, the teeth being slidably mounted in the openings.

The rear end of the passage 6 is enlarged to provide a chamber I2 in the handle 9 and in which is positioned a coil spring I3 having its front end engaging a flange I4 on the rod I0, the rear end of the spring abutting a plate I'I tting in a recess I 8 formed in the end-face of the handle 9. The plate I 'I is secured to the end-face of the handle 9 by means of a screw I9. A cap I5 is threaded on the rear end of the rod Il). The cap I5 is knurled, as indicated at I6, to facilitate gripping thereof by the lingers of a person.

The opposite sides of the body 5 at its front end are formed with slots I'I in which the adapted for insertion.

In the operation of the device, the spring I3 normally projects the rod III forwardly so as to project the resilient teeth II outwardly at one ends of a hairpin I8 are side of the body 5 to thus form a comb for usev in the usual manner.

When it is desired to use the device as a hair curler, the cap I5 is pulled rearwardly from the handle 9 of the body, whereby to move the rod I0 reawardly and to retract the teeth II into the openings I of the body 5. The ends of the hair are clamped to the front end of the body 5 by the hairpin I8 and the body 5 is then turned as a mandrel for winding the hair thereon in a manner to curl the hair.

In View of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in the art. A more detailed 'description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

It is to be understood, however, that even though I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

1. A device of the class described comprising an elongated body having a longitudinally extending passage therein, longitudinally spaced openings extending at an angle through one side of the body communicating with said passage, resilient teeth slidably mounted in said openings, and

longitudinally extending4 a rod slidably mounted in the passage and connected to the inner ends of said teeth for projecting and retracting the teeth upon a longitudinal movement of the rod, said teeth being inclined with respect to said rod at an angle corresponding to the angle of said openings.

2. A device of the class described comprising an elongated body having a. longitudinally extending passage therein, longitudinally spaced openings extending at an angle through one side of the body communicating with the passage, a rod slidably mounted in the passage, spring means engaging the rod to move the rod forwardly, nnger gripping means at the rear end of the rod for moving the rod rearwardly, and resilient teeth connected at their inner ends to the rod and slidably mounted in said openings for extension and 1 retraction through said inclined openings in accordance with the forward and rearward movements of the rod, said teeth being inclined with respect to said rod at an angle corresponding to 5 the angle of said openings.
