This invention relates to a hair curler, and more particularly to a curler of the spool type about which the hair is wound and the curler is allowed to remain in place upon the head until the desired curl is set.

Curlers of the elongated spool or stick type have been used with various means for attaching the coiled curl to the curler. It has been exceedingly difficult, however, to start the lock of hair around the curler, especially when the hair is saturated with the slick wave-setting solutions. The principal object of this invention is to provide a curler which will grasp the tips of the hairs and initially start them in a curl about the curler without slippage or loosening.

Another object of the invention is to provide a curler which will firmly hold the individual hairs in place while they are being wound, and which will retain the hairs in their proper places along the curler until set.

Other objects and advantages reside in thedetail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and efficiency. These will become more apparent from the following description.

In the following detailed description of the invention, reference ishad to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part hereof. Like nucurler;

Fig, 3 is a cross section taken on the line 33, Fig. l; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view illustrating an alternate form of the improved curler.

The improved curler consists of an elongated body portion 10 formed of wood, metal, plastic, or any other suitable material. The body portion terminates in two enlarged extremities II. The body portion is generally circular in cross section and of relatively small diameter at its middle, expanding gradually outward on a curvilinear outline to the full diameter of the enlarged ends ll.

Two rows of comb teeth I2 are formed on or attached to the body portion I0 and extend longitudinally thereof in two opposite straight rows. The teeth l2 terminate in alignment with each other at their outer extremities in a straight line, the line being wholly within the diameter of the enlarged ends ll. Two rows of comb teeth l2 on opposite sides of the body portion, as illustrated, have been found to be the preferred arrangement. It would be possible, however, to employ a single row of comb teeth, or rows in addition to the two shown, if desired.

An elastic tie member I3 is secured at one extremity in a receiving opening M in one of the heads Ii, and terminates at its other extremity in a button I5. The other head H is provided with cross slots I6 of a wedge shape for receiving the extremity of the tie member l3, as indicated in broken line in Fig. 1.

' In use, the comb teeth 12 are inserted in a lock of hair and are drawn therealong to the extremity of the lock. The curler is then rotated so that the teeth I2 will carry the ends of the hairs about the body portion In to start the curl thereabout. The two rows of comb teeth. will successively enter the hair of the lock to retain the hair in place until the latter has been completely rolled about the body portion It]. The elastic tie member I3 is then drawn across the coiled curl and engaged in one of the slots IE to lock the curler to the lock of hair.

In Fig. 4 an alternate form is shown, having a body portion I! similar in contour to the body portion I!) previously described. In this form, however, a plurality of small protuberances l8 are formed on the body portion to provide a roughened surface to facilitate winding hair about the curler.

While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:

1. A hair curler comprising: an elongated body portion of generally circular cross section and of less diameter at its middle than at its ends; enlarged extremities on said body portion; a plurality of comb teeth arranged in a longitudinal row along said body portion; means for attaching said body portion to a hair curl, said row of teeth terminating in alignment in a substantially straight line parallel to the axis of said body portion so that the teeth at the middle of the curler will be of greater length than the teeth adjacent the enlarged extremitiesthereof.

2. A hair curler comprising: an elongated body portion of generally circular cross section and of less diameter at its middle than at its ends; enlarged extremities on said body portion; a plurality of comb teeth arranged in a longitudinal row along said body portion; means for attaching said body portion to a hair curl; said new of teeth terminating in alignment in a substantially straight line parallel to the axis of said body portion so that the teeth at the middle of the curler will be of greater length than the teeth adjacent
