This invention relates to hair curlers. The present invention contemplates the provision of a hair curler of the flexible type, the curler Another object of this invention is to provide" a flexible hair curler which is formed of an elongated narrow strip of leather, the strip having a rectangular opening adjacent one end which constitutes a keeper, and the strips having a locking head at the other end which is adapted to be inserted through said opening so as to lock the ends together and form a loop. The flexible strip is also iormed with an elongated slot extending lengthwise of the strip, the slot being of sawtooth configuration so as to provide a longer slot within a limited length to accommodate a greater amount of hair. i
The provision of the serrated or saw-tooth edge of the slot also provides an arrangement wherein the hair will curl better and more readily than where a straight slot is used, the confronting angled side of the slot tending to apply pressure to the hair within the slot as the curler is bent in loop form, the pressure of the angled sides of the slot also tending to automatically position the hairs in side-by-side relation and eliminate bunching or slipping of the hair toward one end of the slot.
A further object of this invention is to provide i a curler which embodies a serrated slot and also arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein are shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may .be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing: T
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a hair curler 1 Claim. (01. 132-44) invention, t
Figure 2 is a side elevation partly broken away ,on the line 8--8 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 i a side elevation of the device showing the hair first inserted within the serrated slot,
Figures is a fragmentary sectional view take on th line ill-l0 of Figure 4, I Figure 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line lI-H ofv Figure 5 but showing the hair Wrapped about the curler in addition to extending through the toothed slot.
Where a hair curler is formed with a straight slot, suchas the haircurler shown in Patent Number 1,945,932, dated February 6, 1934,- the hair not only has a tendency to bunch together in portions of the slot, but has a tendency to slide or slip toward one end of the slot, Whereas with a curler having an irregular slot, as hereinbefore described, the hair when once positioned in the slot, will stay in its proper position and cannot Referring now to Figures 1 to 6 inclusive, there:
is disclosed a form of this curler which includes an elongated flexible strip Illa having a rounded end portion Ha at one end thereof and a locking head I 4a carried by a reduced stem l2a. The strip Illa adjacent the rounded end I la is formed with a rectangularopening 13a and i formed lengthwise thereof inwardly of the opening l3a with a saw-tooth hair receiving slot Mia.
The strip Illa at the opposite longitudinal edges thereof and through substantially the length of the slot ifia is formed with outer edgeserrations or teeth 20. The serration or teeth 20 are V-shaped in plan and are correlated with the teeth formed by the slot l6a so that the hair extended through the slot 16a may be wrapped about the strip [0a for as many, times as may be considered necessary or desirable and then the locking head Ma is inserted into the keeper or opening 13a. The serrations formed by the slot 16a serve to spread the hairwithin the slot and keep the hair from bunching. The teeth 20 on the outer opposite longitudinal edges of the strip Illa ooact with the teeth of the slot to maintain the smoothness and separation of the hair strands effected by the teeth of the slot I Go. In this manner the hair will ,be held against shifting along the outer edges of the strip I (la and a more firm wave will be set in the hair than i possible with a curler having only the central toothed slot.
The use and operation of the curler shown in Figures 1 to 6, inclusive, is as follows: the hair is extended through the slot Ilia and is then wrapped about the strip Illa, the hair in being wrapped about the edges of the strip l fla engaging within the spaces between the teeth 20; In this manner the hair will be maintained in separated form so that there will not be any bunching of the hair after the latter is extended from the toothed longitudnial slot.
longitudinal edges of said member, the configuration of said slot and the opposite longitudinal edges of said member providing for holding the hair against shifting when said member is bent subsequent to the wrapping of the hair thereabout.
