WITNESS: ATTORNEY Patented June 21, 1927.

NENA M. ADAMS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. f
HAIR WRAPPER.
Application filed May 7,
This invention relates to improvements in hair wrappers used for forming'waves ladies hair. I The principal ob ect'of the invention resides in a hair wrapper adapted to form a operator for forming either a Marcel wave or an ordinary curl, or both simultaneously.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a hair wrapper constructed of a single piece of mater1al and which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost in comparison to those types of hair wrappers now on the market.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of wh ch are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the hair wrapper per se.
Figure 2 is a similar view but showing the manner of attaching the same to the hair to be wound.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the wrapper. with the hair wound thereon.
Figure 4: is a detail view of a'hank of hair after being removed from the wra per.
Referring more particularly to the rawing, the reference numeral 10 designates my improved hair wrapper in its entirety which is cross shaped in elevation and comprises a longitudinal rod or shank 11, which tapers from one end toward its other end. A. pair.
of oppositely extending arms 12 project outwardly from the shank 11 adjacent. the nar row or top end thereof for a purpose to be presently explained. The top end of the shank has an annular groove 13. therein, while the extreme top end of the same is slit to provide right angularly disposed slots 14.
The wrapper may be molded into a single piece and is preferably constructed of light metal so as not to weigh too heavily upon the head when applied thereto for forming the desired waves.
1926. Serial No. 107,477.
In the operation ofthe wrapper, a string or flexible element 15 isfwound about the hank of hair lbto be waved adjacent the base of the same, so as to group the hairs, after which the free end of the string is seated in the annular groove 13 on the top end of the shank so that the wrapper is supported from the hank of hair. The free ends of the string are next inserted in the respective slots 14 in the end of the shank so as to prevent unwinding of the string, which would tend to cause the wrapper to become separated from the hair. The hank of hair 16 is wound over and under the respective arms 12 in the manner shown in Figure 3 of the drawing until the length of hair to be marceled is contained on the arms. It
isthe practice, due to the style of ladies" hair dress to curl the ends of the hair and it is accomplished by winding the free end of the hank about the shank or bar. 11 below the cross arm. The usual protecting pad is adapted to receive the wrapper with the hair wounu thereon, after which the usual heating element is applied to produce the, waves.
possible to form a perfect Marcel wave and curl in less time than those types of wrappers now used for this purpose.
It might be mentioned that either a fiat By reason of the manner of wrapping the hair upon the wrapper, it is.
a detail view of a hank of hair after the wrapper has been removed and it will be noted that a Marcel Wave is formed from the base of the hair outward, while the free ends of the sameare curled. By reason of the tails may be varied without in any way reparting from the spirit of my invention,
and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction, herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claim.
It is understood that my hair wrapper is intended for use in connection with perma; nent waving machines.
\Vhat is claimed as new is A hair waving device comprising a longi tudinal tapering shank which is round in cross secti0n, oppositely disposed arms ex tending therefrom adjacent the narrow end thereofia kerf provided in the narrow end of S316 shank, and an annular groove pro waved whereby the hank of hair may be twisted over and under sa1d arms to produce a wave therein while the free end of the hair is adapted to be wound about said shank toproduce a curl therein,
In testimony whereof I afli'x my signature.
