To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS A. WEST, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Curlers, ot' which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hair curlers, and one of the principal objects of the same isto provide a simple eflicient, inexpensive, nony metallic hair curler which does not require end of the eurler to hold the hair connected to the curler when wound about the same, and whereby the band is relieved from excess strain and the eyelet prevented from tearing out.

The tape when contracted or not under tension is of less length than the stem, and is provided al its free end with an inserted metallic eye or eyelet G adapted to engage the tapered point or projection 3 and to rest against the inclined or oblique shoulder 3.

By means of a curler made in accordance with my invention, various kinds of waves may be formed in the hair by twisting the hair into a rope or strand and Winding it spirally upon the curler, after which the elastic member 4 is drawn tightly over the hair and the eye 6 is engaged with the projection 3, or an ordinary curl may be formed in the hair by merely Winding it around the body portion of the curler and securing the elastic member in the same manner as heretofore described.

It will be understood that the form of the point or projection 3 permits the eyelet 6 at by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

In one end of the stem 1 a longitudinal transverse slot or kerf 2 of uniform width and depth is formed, while the other end of the stem is reduced to provide a tapered point or projection 3 .and is formed at its point of intersection with said rejection with an oblique or inclined shoul er 3, inclined in a directhe free end o f the tape to be engaged therewith with ease and facility, even when the curler is disposed at an inconvenient point in thehair. When the elastic tape is stretched and placed under tension and the eyelet' is engaged with the tapered projection, it will be understood. that the tape at y its point of connection with the eyelet is placed under considerable strain, and that, if the eye when engaged with the projection were arranged at right angles to the stem, the sharp bend or angle formed in the tape at the point of intersection of the latter therewith would render the tape liable to tear away from the eyelet and thus free the latter, and practically render the device inoperative for further use. This objection is overcome by making the shoulder or seat 3a against which the eyelet bears inclined or obliquely arranged, so that the eyelet when engaged therewith will lie at a corresponding angle to the stem, thus reducing the angle of bendreouired to be assumed by the remaining portion of the tape, and, consequently, the amount of strain falling unon the tape at such point. Hence, frequent and lengthy use of the curler will not weaken strain in use.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:

A hair curler comprising an elongated slender stem reduced at one end to form a tapering projection and an oblique shoulder at the point of 'junction of said projection with the stem, the latter Vbeing formed at its opposite end with a longitudinal slot of uniform Width and depth and extending trans- -versely through the stem in a direction at right angles t0 the direction of extension of the oblique shoulder, a flat elastic tape of less length than the stem, said tape beingdoubled or folded upon itself at one end and frictionally fitted and secured by adhesive material in said slot, and an eyelet upon the free end of the tape adapted when said tape is stretched to engage said tapered projection and seat at an angle against said shoulder, substantially as described.
