WILLIAM M. WILLMAN, OF MAHANOY CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAIR-CURLER.
Application filed June 19, 1909.
To all 'lL/LOH'L it may concern.-
Be it known that l. \Vinnlnn M. \Vnm MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Itlahanoy (lily, in the county of Schuylkill and State oi Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved llairCn'rle1', of which the following is a lull. clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a device adapted to be used for curling the hair of women and children.
The object of the invention is to produce a device for this purpose which will he simile in construction, and which can be readily applied when in practi all use.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to he more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to he had to the acc(. 1npanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate eorrespomling parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a. perspective of the device showing its normal appearance when not in use; Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the re lation of the parts when the device is in op eration; Fi 3 a longitudinal central sec tion taken t trough the device when the parts are in the relation shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the device showing it as in operation; and Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3 upon an enlarged scale.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the body of the device which is in the form of a round bar, having an en larged head 2 at one end thereof provided With a transverse slot or groove 3. This slot is diametrically disposed, as indicated. The ends of the slot 3 register with longitudinal grooves 4 which extend along the sides of the bar 1 throughout the entire length thereof. In the grooves 4 of the body 1, an endless cord or band 5 of elastic material, such as rubber, is placed, and this band forms a bight 6 passing through. the bottom of the groove 3. At the other end of the device the elastic band forms an open 100 7, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3. The loo y 1 is enveloped in a tubular casing or sleeve 8 which fits neatly over the body, as shown, the outer diameter of the said tube Specification of Letters Patent.

being substantially the same as the outer diameter of the head. It. should be under stood that the tube or sleeve 8 is i'rietiontight so that it will hold itself in position securely when the parts have been brought together.
W'hen the device is to he used. a strand or wisp of hair is wrapped around the tube or sleeve 8 helieally, and the loop 7 is then extended and fastened in the notch or slot. 3 in the manner indicated in Fig.
In Fig. -i the hair is ll1('lltltttl by the numeral fl, and it will be seen that the sides of the loop T press the hair against the device and hold it in position.
Instead of making the device of round cross section it may be made angular or square. if desired, so as to produce a wave effect in the hair. In practice the loop T may be made very small so that it will not interfere with the operation of winding the hair about the device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt,--
1. A device of the class described, having a bar, a tubular sleeve receiving said bar, and an elastic band secured between said sleeve and said bar and forming a. projecting loop at one end of said bar adapted to be extended to the opposite. end, the opposite end of the device having means for retaining said loop when extended.
2. In a device of the class described, a bar having longitudinally disposed grooves in the side faces thereof, an extensible band lying in said grooves and extending longitudinally of said bar, and a tubular sleeve receiving said bar and securing said band, said band having a loop adapted to be extended to engage the opposite end of said device.
3. A device of the class described, having a. bar with a slot formed in one end thereof, a tubular sleeve received over said bar, and an extensible band having its sides disposed between said bar and said sleeve, said band having a projecting loop at. the end of said device opposite to said slot and adapted to be extended to engage said slot.
4. A device of the class described, having a bar having an enlarged head with a transverse slot therein a tubular sleeve received over said bar and having its end abutting against said head, said bar having grooves extending longitudinally on the sides thereof, and an extensible bend received in said grooves passing through said slot and havmg a loop projecting from said sleeve at the end remote from said slot.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subserlblng Witnesses.
