To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LETTITIA C. Bornns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cynthiana, inthe county of Harrison and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Curlers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hair curlers and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will possess efficiency toward a perfect curl of the hair with the minimum labor and which will be capable of convenient manipulation.

Another object of the invention is to provide a curler which will include a binding element and a forming element that are capable of relative association during the curling operation and capable of convenient disconnection from each other after the proper curl of the hair is effected.

In the drawing forming a portion of this application, and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several viewsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the initial position of the device against the head. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position of the binding element after a complete winding of the hair thereon is made. Fig. 3 is a similar view. with the former removed from the binding element and illustrating the latter in secured position upon the'hair. Fig. 4; is a section through a portion of the former and a portion of the binding view, showing a slightly modified form of former; and Fig. 6 is a section through one end of the binding.

The device comprises a 1 which is preferably circular in tion and of sufficient length to warrant its length of forming element is pointed as at 2 while! its opposite end is preferably provided with a flat manipulating head 3 which has a central opening 4 therein whereby when pressure is brought against the opposite sides of the head by the fingers of the user of the device it may be effectually held in the required position.

The binding element 5 preferably comprises a piece of braid or suitable fabric material that is capable of being readily folded and tied and as illustrated the braid is pro? the maximum 7 element. Fig. 5 is a plan v vided at its opposite ends with inturned portions 6 and 7 defining elongated end sockets 8. The inturned ends 6 and 7 of the braid extend the entire length of the socket and each inturned end is secured to the adjacent portion of the braid suitable means at the inner end of the socket, so that the sockets are reinforced throughout their length and their thickness increased to prevent the ends of the braid from being Withdrawn from between the fingers of the user of the device when the braid is being tied in a knot after the point of the former has been removed from the socket for a purpose which will be herein after explained.

The binding element has a length exceeding that of the forming element 1 and when using the device the pointed end 2 of the forming element is inserted in one of the sockets 8 of the binder. The binder is then folded on itself as at 9 and it is extended longitudinally against the former and parallel. thereto. The opposite end of the binder then extends considerably beyond the manipulating head 3 of the former whereby the extension of is free to be gripped between the fingers of the user as shown in Fig. 1. The binder is then held operatively associated with the former and after moistening the hair it may be wrapped around the former and the binder, starting at a point adjacent to the head 3 and winding in the direction of the point 2 of the former and then back again. After the entire length of hair has been wound upon the device as described the socket portion of the binder is disengaged from the point 2 of the former. The former is then drawn through the curled or twisted portions of the hair until the hair occupies a position centrally of the binder. former is then removed and the opposite terminals of the binder which are prevente from slipping from between the fingers of the operator by the thickness of the braid at the pockets are brought together and tied one or more times around the twistedhair and thereby secured in place for the required length of time necessary to the proper formation of the curl.
