SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,836, dated November 3, 1896.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES HENRY BALD- WIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented'a new and useful Hair-Curler, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair-curlers, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient hair curling device made from flexible and non-elastic material, comprising in its construction an integral tongue or clamping portion, by means of which the end of a lock or bunch of hair maybe engaged by the device preparatory to the curling of the hair thereon.
To this end the invention consists in an improved hair-curlin g deviceembodyin g certain novel features and details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the method of curling the hair.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The improved hair-curler contemplated in the present invention comprises an oblong body 1, having oppositely-extending longitudinal portions 2 of relatively less width than the central or body portion. The main body of the device is provided with a U-shaped incision 3, thus forming a central integral tongue 4, which is disposed longitudinally of the device.
The hair curling device shown and described is made from some thin flexible and non-elastic material, such as lead or a combination of lead and Banca tin or other suitable alloy which will aiford the necessary degree of pliability and adapt the device to be used repeatedly without danger of fracture.
The hair-curler may be coated with gold paint or other compound and may be given any desired ornamental finish, the aim of the invention being to form the device in a single piece having an integral clamping-tongue for engaging the hair.
In the use of the device the end of a lock or bunch of hair is passed under the tongue 4, and the tongue is then depressed, so as to confine the hair between it and the main body 1 upon each side of the space formerly occu-.
pied by the tongue. The hair is thus firmly clamped and gripped by' the tongue. By grasping the end portions 2 of the device the latter is now revolved, at the same time winding the hair around the body'of the curler, and when sufficient hair is wound thereon the end portions of the curler are bent inward toward each other and around the hair and compressed toward the body of the device, thus confining the hair between such end portions and the body. The device may now be released by the fingers and will remain in place until the operation just described is reversed.
The hair-curling device described may be stamped from sheet material at a single operation, and is thus exceedingly economical in manufacture.
It will be understood that the device is sus ceptible of changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction, which may accordingly be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A hair-curler comprising a pliable non-resilient metal body wider at the central portion than at the ends and having a U-shaped cut in said centralportion to form a tongue integral therewith, said tongue running length wise of the body, whereby the hair may be clamped beneath the tongue and rolled over the body to form a curl and the ends of the body folded over to secure the same, substantially as described.
