HOWARD W. REYNOLDS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HAIR-CURLING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I-IowARD W. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IIair-Curling Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair curlers and comprises a simple and eflicient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figurel is a side elevation of a hair curler embodying features of my invention and showing the rubber bands as applied thereto for holding the hair when curled. Fig. 2 is a modification of my invention in which the curler is made of a single piece of flanged metal, Figs. 3 and 4; are detailed views of modifications of the invention and Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the handle of the device, showing in edge elevation the forked end thereof.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the curler, made preferably of a single piece of wire and bent upon itself, the shank portions B engaging a handle C. Said wire is bent at its longitudinal center to form a loop D and having parallel portions substantially half the length of the loop, so as to guide the band centrally on the roll of hair. Said wire has its outer marginal edges inclined slightly, and merging into flaring shoulders E, thence bent to form two straight portions F which are at right angles to the end of said loop D. H, II designate rubber bands which are caught in said loop and extend over the fiat portions H in the manner shown in Fig. l of the drawings in readiness for use in fastening the hair after it has been curled.
In operation, the hair is dampened, combed out and divided into medium sized Specification of Letters Patent.

strands. The curler is then placed next to the head and the strand of hair and wit-h the other hand wrapped about the body portion of the curler until it is full. Then wit-h the thumb and finger of the hand holding the curler, the roll may be held while with the free hand, the rubber band is grasped at the shoulder and moved around over the rolled hair and releasing the band between the fingers or prongs of curler. This being done, the curler may be withdrawn and a new band placed thereon in the manner shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, after which the operation may be repeated.
I11 Figs. 2, 3 and 4: of the drawings, I have shown slight modifications of my invention, but in each the same principle is embodied, consisting of the forming of means for holding the rubber over a portion of the curler which is at right angles to the inner end of the loop portion and in such a manner, that, when the hair is in readiness to be held by the rubber, the latter may be stretched and drawn over the end of the curler and made to engage the hair about the roll thereof, the outer sloping edges of the device allowing it to be freely withdrawn.
lVhat I claim to be new is l. A hair curler having a slot in the end thereof, the inner marginal edges of which slot are parallel a portion of their lengths, the outer marginal edges of the curler being inclined and terminating at their inner ends in portions which are at right angles to the inner end of the slot, and a rubber band adapted to be positioned intermediate said parallel portions and to engage about the coil of hair.
2. A hair curler made of a single piece of wire which is bent to form a loop with parallel portions a portion of its length, said wire being bent to form inclined portions terminating at their inner ends in shoulders, said wire having flattened portions intermediate said shoulders and the shank of the curler, and bands engaging said loop and passing about said flattened portions.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HOWVARD WV. REYNOLDS.
