Description

TES PATENT OFFICE. l
ALBERT JULIUS LARM, OF HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND.
HAIR-WAITING DEVICE.
Application filed May 3, 1928. Serial No. 274,865.
This invention relates to hair curlers and more particularly to hair curlers for use 1n the formation of what is generally known asy a water wave.
An important object of the invention is to produce a'device which forms a flowing wave in the hair and which is so constructed that the hair which is dampened in application o'f the device thereto ma-y be very readily dried while in position thereon.
Afurther object of the invention is to pro.
duce for use with a device of this character a clamp for holding the hair firmly in position upon the curler. .A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily and cheaply manufactured and which is so simple in its construction and operation that a highrdegree of skill is not necessary to its use.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of`myinvention and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view showing hair waving apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention applied to the hair;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of one of the waving devices with the associated clamp engaged therewith;
Figure 3 is a'section on the line 3*?) of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a section on the line fl-Lt of j Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the clamp.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates a foraminous tube formed from a sheet of screen, the edges of which are bent back upon the outer surface thereof to form flanges- 11 for engagement by the reverted ianges 12 formed upon the edges of a metallic strip 13. The flanges 12 are forced toward the strip 13 to clamp the flanges 11 and hold the tube in its formed relation. The ends of the tube are reverted upon the interior of the tube 14, so that no rough edges are presented which might injure the hair or person.
In combination with a tube of this character, I provide a clamp consisting of a pair of levers 15, each having one end thereof formed as a handle 16 and the opposite end thereof vided at the edges thereof with similarly directed ears 18 which are perforated for the passage of a pivot pin 19, by means of which the levers are connected. Around this pivot pin between the ears, a spring 20 is ,coiled and has its ends engaged with the handle portions to force them apart sothat the jaws are normally in engagement with one another..
The. jaws 17 are 0f`substan'tially the same length as the tube 10.
In. the use of the device, a strand of hair, which has been previously dampened, is wound upon the tube 10 and then held by use of one of the clamps.
This clamp is applied by opening'the jaws and inserting one jaw within the tube. The handles ar'e then releasedto permit the jaws to clampupon the tube and the strand of hair rolled thereon. When devices of this character are employed, by using the ordinary heated air fan now in common use in beauty par-- lors, the air is permitted to circulate not only against the interior but' the, exterior of the coil, so that the hair is rapidly dried. The tubes 10 can be made of different diameters so that a wave of any desired proportions can be produced. The clamps may be conveniently employed for forming short waves in the hair, if so desired. p
Since the construction hereinbefore set forth is capable of a certain range of change and modification without materially departing fromth'e spirit of the invention, I do not limit-myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim l. In hair waving apparatus, a foraminous tube having a longitudinally straight side and a clamp removably straddling said side havi ing substantially straight jaws pivoted together and means for urging the jaws toward the inner and outer faces of said side.`
2. In hair waving apparatus, a foraminous tube comprising a sheet of screen material the edges of which vare secured to one another to complete the tube, the tube having a longitudinally straight side, a clamp straddling said side having straight aws pivotcd together, and means for urging the jaws toward one another, the outer ends of said jaws constituting handles whereby the jaws may be moved to open positon against the .action of said means. l
y In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
