Claims.

, The present invention relates generally to improvements in hair curlers, and especially to curlers adapted for use with both short and longhair.

5 It is the primary object of the present invention to provide an efiicient, non-clogging, and ventilated curler that is light of weight, and adapted for use in setting the various types of coiifure now in vogue.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, that. iscompletely self-contained and that may be employed without the use of hair pins, crimpers and like fastening elements. I Another object of the invention is to provide a curler wherein curls or waves of different size may be formed, and one that embodies means for releasing the curler from the hair without snarling or disarranging the curl set in the hair.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described, wherein, when the hair is wound thereon, it will be rapidly dried by the application of the usual dryers, without causing any discoloration or staining of said hair.

The instant invention is an adaptation of an improved form of the device shown in my allowed application, Serial No. 630,483, filed Aug. 26, 1932 for Hair curlers, allowed, Nov. 18, 1932.

Applicant is aware of the fact that there have been many types of hair wave forming devices for use in the curling of hair, and particularly for use in forming what is commonly known, as the long bob roll curls. These devices, however, in most instances are difi'icult to manipulate, heavy upon the head of the user and consequently uncomfortable. Said devices are also easily deranged, thus necessitating the employment of rubber bands, hair-pins and the like, to further secure the hair upon the curler; and entailing increased labor 'on the part of the operator. With applicants device, the hair is quickly wound upon the curler through the manipulation of the rolling iron element, after which said element is withdrawn from the curler, pulling the fastening yoke into place, as fully illustrated in Figure 4.

In the description of the preferred form of my invention, as disclosed in the drawing, the vari- -ous mechanisms include broadly, a rolling iron 6;

ventilated curler 7 fastening yoke 8; and looseningmechanism 9.

The rolling iron 6' is provided with a male jaw 10 and a female jaw 1.1 secured together by means of a rivet 12, as clearly shown in Figures 1-2 and 4-, and said members are drawn together or spread apart in a scissor likemanner by means of handles. The male jaw 10 is provided with a lip 13 protruding at right angles to said jaw 10, and the functions of said lip will be more fully here-.1 inafter described. The outer end 14 of the female jaw 11 is tapered and substantially convexo-concave in transverse cross section, Figure 5, so that it' may readily grip the cylindrical surface of the ventilated curler 7, and the-hair 15, as illustrated in Figure 2.. The tapered end 14 is provided pri- 3a marily to facilitate the withdrawal of the rolling iron 6 from the hair 15 without disturbing the set of the curl.

The ventilated curler 7 is formed from a tubular member 16, and is provided with a plurality g5 of perforations or orifices 1'7 to permit the circulation of air to the hair wound around the curler, as illustrated in Figure 2. A slot 18 is provided in the left hand end of the tubular member 16, and said slot is cut through both walls of the tubular member 16 insuch a manner that the fastening yoke 8 will remain stationary after being inserted within the slot 18. The right hand end of the member 16 is provided with a pair of elongated slots 19, acting as sliding bearings for the fastening yoke 8, as shown in Figures 1-2 and 4.

The fastening yoke 8 is provided with a pivot 20, passing through the. elongated slots 19 of the curler '7, and welded in a suitable manner to 5100 the hubs 21 and 22 of the resilient wire 23, as shown in Figures land 3.

Securely mounted on the inner wall of the member 16 is the loosening mechanism 9 composed of a resilient clamp 24, having one leg of the same passing outwardly through the aperture 25 and thence extending in an arcuate manner alongside the outer face of the curler 7.

The curler '7 is placed against the extreme end of the hair to be treated, and the rolling iron 6 i is inserted into said curler in such a manner that the female jaw 11 will clamp the hair against the outer face of the curler 7, in the manner shown in Figure 2. The fastening yoke 8 is then allowed to fall back against the outer part of the rolling iron 6 and is held in this position by the fingers of the operator. The male jaw 10 passes within the curler in the manner shown in Figure 2, and co-acts with member 11 in exerting pressure to hold the curler 7 and hair 15 in rigid alinement. The rolling iron 6 is now rotated and the hair 15 is evenly wound about the curler 7 and over the loosening mechanism 9, till a roll of the desired amount of hair is obtained. The operator now relaxes control over the fastening yoke 8, and proceeds to turn same over the hair,

at the same time pulling said yoke into the slot 18, as shown by directional arrows in Figure 4. When the small end 26 of the yoke is opposite the slot 18, pressure is removed from the rolling iron 6 and the female jaw 11 releases its grip upon the hair 15, and the rolling iron 6 may now be withdrawn from the curler 7. While withdrawing, the lip 13 of the male jaw 10 engages the pivot member and pulls the small end 26 of the resilient wire 23 into the slot 18. After the curl has had time to set, the operator grasps the small end 26 of the yoke 8, pulling same clear of the slot 18 and thus releasing the hair. The hair having been released by the yoke, slightly unwinds, due to the pressure exerted by the loosening mechanism 9. The inside diameter of the curl now being larger than the diameter of the curler, said curler is readily slipped out of the curl, without snarling or disarranging said curl.

I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States the following:-

1.. A device of the class described comprising nesacco in combination, a cylindrical curling element, a

resilient yoke pivoted thereon and slidable relative thereto, locking means carried by one end of said curler and adapted to receive the free end of said yoke, and a rolling iron insertable onto said cylindrical curling element and having jaws adapted to grip the same.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a cylindrical curling element, said element having a pivoted yoke arranged thereon and adapted to slide relative thereto, locking means carried by one end of said curler and adapted to receive the free end of said yoke to clamp strands upon said curler, of a rolling, iron means associated with said curler and.embodying gripping jaws adapted to grip the curler and cause rotational motion to be imparted thereto to form the curl.

5. In a curling device of the class described, a cylindrical curling element, a resilient yoke pivoted thereon and having its pivoted end slidable therein, slots formed in the opposite end of said curling element to receive said yoke, means for drawing the free end of said yoke into said slots to lock the same on said element, and means for releasing the same from its/locked position.
