Description

INVENTOR.
c a w L Dec. 13, 1966 F. QUINIO ETAL ELECTRICALLY HEATED CURLING IRON WITH MEANS FOR MAKING VARIOUS-SIZED CURLS Filed Feb 15, 1966 United States Patent 3,291,141 ELECTRICALLY HEATED CURLING IRON WITH MEANS FOR MAKING VARIOUS-SIZED CURLS Frank Quinio, 532 2nd Ave., Tarentum, Pa., and Louis Quinio, Jr., 522 Beaver Sh, Sewickley, Pa. Filed Feb. 15, 1966, Ser. No. 539,239 7 Claims. (Cl. 132-33) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hair curling devices and the present application is a continuation-in-part of application serially numbered 124,474 filed July 17, 1961 and now abandoned. It is among the objects of this invention to provide a plurality of adaptor tubes to an electrically heated combination comb and curler to utilize the heat of the curler and the teeth of the comb for engaging the strands of hair to wrap them around the adaptor tubes to produce curls of different sizes.
The invention will become more apparent from a consideration of the accompanying drawing constituting a part hereof in which like reference characters designate like parts and in which:
FIGURE 1 is an electric curling iron with a comb portion for combing out and curling hair in the presence of heat to set the hair in a curl;
FIGURE 2 is a similar view of the curler of FIGURE 1 with an adaptor tube mounted thereon;
FIGURE 3 is an elevational view of the adaptor tube shown in FIGURE 2; and,
FIGURE 4 is an end elevational view taken along the line 4-4, FIGURE 2, diagrammatically illustrating the different sized adaptor tubes that may be employed to obtain different sized hair curls or waves.
With reference to the several figures of the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a curling rod of cylindrical shape having an electrical heating element disposed therein connected by a cord 2 to the outlet plug of an electric circuit. The numeral 3 designates a handle portion with the usual metal ferrule 4 at the end thereof. The heated body portion of the curling iron is provided with a series of teeth or tines 5 arranged in a row to function as a comb in separating strands of hair which have been trimmed so that the ends of the hair strands are of substantially uniform length. When the comb is drawn to near the end of the strand, it is rotated to cause the strands to wrap around the body portion 1 to obtain a certain degree of tension on the hair strands. The heat of the iron then acts upon the hair to fix or set it in a curl which, when it is combed out, will produce a hair wave.
As shown in FIGURE 2, the curl may be controlled in size by utilizing split tubes 6, the tubes having a slot 7 through which the tines 5 of the comb portion project. As is diagrammatically illustrated by the dot and dash lines in FIGURE 4, tubes 8 and 9 of different diameters or sizes may be employed to obtain curls of larger size or waviness. After the adaptor tubing 6 has been applied and the hair heated in the manner shown in FIG- URE 4, other portions of the hair are combed out and revolved around the adaptor tubing 6, 8 or 9, whichever size is employed, and while under tension, the heat is applied through the curling iron 1 to set the hair in the same manner as if it were curled directly on the cylindrical body portion 1.
We have found in practice that hair curlers with the adaptor tubes allow for a wide range of curl or wave sizes and they are readily attached to the comb type or other kinds of curling irons.
By slotting out the tubing to let the tines 5 of the comb project therethrough, there is sufficient tension on the adaptor tube to hold it in place in alignment with the tooth portion of the curler. When the curl has been 3,29l,l4 l Patented Dec. 13, 1966 finished, it is a simple matter to unwind the curling strands of hair and comb them out, and all three or more sizes of adaptor tubes may be used by the operator in curling or waving the hair of a single customer, the side portions of the hair requiring perhaps larger adaptor tubes or tubes of different shapes than the front or top portions.
Although one embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be evident to those skilled in the art that various modifications may be made in the details of construction without departing from the principles herein set forth.
We claim:
1. In combination with an electric curling iron having a handle portion and a heating element with a surface for curling strands of hair, a cylindrical adaptor tube for making curls of a size larger than said heating element mounted on said curling iron, said adaptor tube being larger in diameter than said heating element and having a substantial portion of its cylindrical body spaced from the heating element when mounted thereon and said adaptor tube having heat transfer contact with and being frictionally engageable upon the hair curling surface of said heating element substantially the full length of said adaptor tube to conduct heat from said heating element through the entire body of the adaptor tube.
2. In combination with an electric curling iron having a handle portion and a heating element with a surface for curling strands of hair, a cylindrical adaptor tube for making curls of :a size larger than said heating element mounted on said curling iron, said adaptor tube being larger in diameter than said heating element and having a substantial portion of its cylindrical body spaced from the heating element when mounted thereon and said adaptor tube having heat transfer contact with and being frictionally engageable upon the hair curling surface of said heating element substantially the full length of said adaptor tube to conduct heat from said heating element through the entire body of the adaptor tube, said adaptor tube and curling iron having interacting means for maintaining alignment of said tube and heating element.

5. A hair curling device as set forth in claim 2 in which the interacting means for maintaining alignment of the tube and heating element consist of teeth on the heating element and a slot in said tube.
6. In combination with an electric curling iron having a handle portion and a heating element for conducting heat to said iron, said curling iron having a surface for curling strands of hair, a cylindrical adaptor tube being larger in diameter than said curling iron for making curls of a size larger in diameter than said curling iron and having a substantial portion of its cylindrical body spaced from said curling iron when mounted on said curling iron, and said adaptor tube having heat transfer contact with and being frictionally engageable upon the hair curling surface of said curling iron substantially the full length of said adaptor tube to conduct heat from said curling iron through the entire body of said adaptor tube, said curling iron and adaptor tube including first and second members, said members having interacting means comprising an upstanding body portion and a slot bordered by the edges of free end walls, said upstanding body portion being received in said slot and engageable with the edges of the end walls.
