ticians comb with removable auxiliary teeth and more particularly pertains to a hair dressers comb having a novel and improved construction enabling the hair dresser to perform a variety of operations simultaneously or selectively in the combing and dressing of hair.

The primary object of this invention is to provide a hair dressers comb which shall be effective for the normal combing operations of the hair and which may also be utilized for efficiently back combing, ratting or teasing the hair.

A further object of the invention is to provide a beauticians comb which will greatly facilitate the forming of rolls or curls and the transfer of such curls from the comb and finger of the operator to a spool, curler or roll.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a beauticians comb in which the head of the comb shall be constructed for. detachably mounting thereon an auxiliary set of teeth projecting substantially at right angles to the main teeth of the comb to perform the secondary operation of back combing, ratting or teasing of the hair.

Yet another object of the invention is to provide a device in accordance with the preceding objects wherein the handle of the comb shall be pivotally mounted thereon for folding movement between a position in alignment with the head of the comb and one in which the handle is folded over into close juxtaposition to the comb head and wherein the pivot handle'is'provided with a resilient clip to assist in holding the hair during the forming of curls or rolls.

These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

FIGURE 1 is a perspective View showing a preferred 3,192,934 -Patentecl July 6, 1955 ice Referring first to FIGURE 1 it will be observed that a preferred embodiment of a beauticians comb incorporating therein the principles of this invention consists of a main comb body indicated generally by the numeral 10 and which has a handle 12 pivotally secured thereto as at 14. The pivotal mounting of the 'ha'ndle upon the main body of the comb is such that the handle may be pivoted into an aligned extended position shown in FIG- URE 1 in which the handle serves the normal functions of a handle for the head 16 of the comb or as shown in FIGURE 7 in which the handle together with itsclip 18 may be utilized to assist in holding the hair and forming a roll or curl therewith. In FIGURES 2 and 3 there is shown the folded position of the handle in which the latter is brought into parallel juxtaposed relation with respect to the head 16 of the comb.

The teeth 26 are disposed in a common plane and in a row extending longitudinally of the main body portion 22 of the comb head. As so far described it will be understood that the main body portion 22 of. the comb head 16 and the main or primary teeth 26 may be employed for anyof the usual functions of -a straight'comb.

Associated with thecomb, head and detachably mounted thereon is an attachment indicated .generallybylhe numeral 30. This attachment, as will be more readily apparent from a comparison of FIGURES 4 and 6, consists of an elongated hollow sleeve-like member or body 32 which is slidably receivable upon the arm 24 where it will be retained by a frictional engagement therewith. Sets of auxiliary teeth areintegrally formed upon and carried by the member 32. These auxiliary teeth, each indicated by the numeral 34, are disposed in longitudinally extending rows, in two groups. The outer group 34 is of slightly greater length than the inner group 36. In addition, there is a third single row 38 extending longitudinally of and upon the medial line of the top surface or" the member 32 as indicated at 38 in FIGURES 1, 4 and 6.

34 and 36 are curved downwardly toward the main teeth 26, each group consisting of two oppositely directed rows of auxiliary teeth. The arrangement is such that the attachment can be readily applied to the arm 24 or removed therefrom. 'When applied, as shown in FIGURE 1 and as illustrated in use in FIGURE 8, the auxiliary teeth may be utilized to back comb, rat or tease the hair. In this operation the auxiliary teeth alone may be used or they may be used in conjunction with the main teeth. This instrument, therefore, provides a single implement thereby saving the hair dressers time when performing the successive operations of straight combing, ratting or back combing and the like.

Referring again to FIGURE 1 in particular it will be observed that the handle 12 is provided with a resilient pivot means 40 thereon by means of which the spring clip 18 is pivotally mounted. This spring clip is provided with a fingergrip'42 which facilitates pivoting of the spring clip to its open position upon the handle. It will be observed that the blade of the clip opens toward the outer extremity of the handle. A typical use of this clip is depicted in FIGURE 7 where it will be seen that the finger of the operator, the extremity of'the handle and the spring clip are each utilized to grip a tress of hair and assist in rolling the hairin the form of a roll or curl about the finger. When so rolled, the clip secures the rolled -hair to the handle allowing the finger to be withdrawn and a curler or other hair retaining member to be inserted into the roll.

When the attachment 30 is removed from the arm 24, a hair roll or curler may be inserted in the slot 20 between the arm and the main portion 22 so that as the main teeth comb the hair, the hair can be forced against the curl or roller retained in this slot.

As will be apparent, the various components of this comb lend themselves to a variety of different operations and various combination of operations which are commonly encountered by beauticiansin performing different types of hair dressing operations.

The foregoing is considered as illustrative .only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents maybe resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What is claimed as new is as follows:

1. A multiple purpose comb comprising an elongated fiat plate-like back and a handle projecting longitudinally therefrom, said back having a set of longitudinally spacedmain teeth projecting in the plane of said back perpendicularly from one longitudinal edge thereof, said ii back having a longitudinal slot adjacent its other longitudinal edge defining thereby a rod-like arm lying in the plane of said back and said slot and arm extending substantially the full length of the main. teeth and from the end of the back remote from said handle, an auxiliary uniformly spaced relation to said first mentioned auxiliary teeth and overlying and extending outwardly beyond the latter.

3. The combination of claim 2 including a third set of auxiliary teeth on said body projecting upwardly therefrom and disposed oppositely to and in alignment with said main teeth.

4. A multiple purpose comb comprising an elongated flat plate-like back and a handle projecting longitudinally therefrom, said back having a set of longitudinally spaced main teeth projecting in the plane of said back perpendicularly from one longitudinal edge thereof, said back having a longitudinalslot adjacent its other longitudinal edge defining thereby a rod-like arm lying in the plane of said back and said slot and arm extending substantially the full length of the main teeth and from the end of the back remote from said handle, an auxiliary tooth assembly detachably and axially slidably mounted upon said arm, said auxiliary tooth assembly comprising an elongated tubular body slidingly engaged upon and detachably embracing said arm, a plurality of circumferentially spaced longitudinal sets of auxiliary teeth on said body and projecting laterally from said arm and said body, said sets of auxiliary teethincluding first and second sets of teeth curving laterally outwardly and downwardly from said. body on opposite sides of. said back and having the outer ends of said auxiliary teeth terminating in vertically andzhorizontally spaced relation to the base of said main teeth.

5. The combination of claim 4 wherein the teeth in said first and second sets are disposed in side-by-side uniformly .spaced relation and with the upper and outermost set of auxiliary teeth being longer than and overhanging the other and lower set.

Claims

1. A MULTIPLE PURPOSE COMB COMPRISING AN ELONGATED FLAT PLATE-LIKE BACK AND A HANDLE PROJECTING LONGITUDINALLY THEREFROM, SAID BACK HAVING A SET OF LONGITUDINALLY SPACED MAIN TEETH PROJECTING IN THE PLANE OF SAID BACK PERPENDICULARLY FRON ONE LONGITUDINALLY EDGE THEREOF, SAID BACK HAVING A LONGITUDINAL SLOT ADJACENT ITS OTHER LONGITUDINAL EDGE DEFINING THEREBY A ROD-LIKE ARM LYING IN THE PLANE OF SAID BACK AND SAID SLOT AND ARM EXTENDING SUBSTANTIALLY THE FULL LENGTH OF THE MAIN TEETH AND FROM THE END OF THE BACK REMOTE FROM SAID HANDLE, AN AUXILIARY TOOTH ASSEMBLY DETACHABLY AND AXIALLY SLIDABLY MOUNTED UPON SAID ARM, SAID AUXILIARY TOOTH ASSEMBLY MOUNTED ELONGATED BODY HAVING A BORE BY WHICH IT IS SLIDABLY RECEIVED UPON SAID ARM, A SET OF LATERALLY AND OUTWARDLY PROJECTING AUXILIARY TEETH ON SAID BODY, SAID AUXILIARY TEETH CURING OUTWARDLY AND DOWNWARDLY FROM SAID BODY WITH THEIR OUTER ENDS TERMINATING ABOVE THE BASE OF SAID MAIN TEETH.
